Dont worry it is still my intention to not return here.
but i spent all night attempting to mod SS2 and failing miserably.
...so i have come crawling back asking for help. if nobody wants to help me i understand.
-my OS is windows 7
-i have version 3.0 of SS2Tool.
-i downloaded SHTUP & Rebirth, extracted the files and put them in the data permanent mods folder.
i then played the game and there was no differences to the textures or the NPCs.
so then
-in the readme text of SHTUP it said to make a new folder titled res, and move all the .crf files into it, 16 in total. then to copy install.cfg and then edit it in notepad. done that.
-an invisible folder titled $AVG appeared in the Datapermenentmods folder when using win rar which i deleted. apparently its an automated file that avg put in there or something.
still not working.
where could i have gone wrong? please bear in mind my only other experience with mods is using SS2Tool to get SS2 running in the first place.

Wrong forum. You want Legacy Gaming Help or SS Technical Help.

i was hoping zylon bane would be forgiving. Didnt realise he was the guy behind the mod until half way through my attempt to get it working.

Hey, look at that... a normal newbie post for a change.
Suggest you visit (
http://www.systemshock.org/) http://www.systemshock.org/ and read the Technical FAQ before anything else. It's Kolya's site (Kolya is another TTLG member) and it's sorta the central place for SS2 modding.
I also suggest using SS2 modmanager rather than manually installing the mods. For me, a vanilla SS2 install followed by SS2Tool followed by SS2 modmanager just works.

argh this is all so confusing!
i already been on that website. scanned through it for hours....i know very little about mods and have trouble with the smallest thing.
but i thought i got so close... surely its just 1 thing ive missed
allthough the thing that website was never too clear about, at least for me, was SS2 being "mod ready"

so if i just delete the contents of the data permanent mods folder and install the mod manager and try again that way? or do i just reinstall? cos setting up the ss2tool was a demanding task alone!

I think SS2Tool gets your installation "mod ready" by moving original files, creating the mod directory, and modifying install.cfg
To do a permanent install of SHTUP after you've already used SS2Tool to make it "mod ready", I think you only need to copy it into DataPermanentMods. I don't recall needing to edit install.cfg.
I used Modmanager to try out Rebirth and other mods and had no problems.
It sounds like you might have a mixed up configuration and perhaps your install.cfg isn't pointing to the right place, but I'm not an expert in SS2 modding.
Suggest you either seek help on SMA ((
www.systemshock.org)) or just start over from scratch and install SS2 (vanilla shock folder), then SS2Tool, then SS2 Modmanager, and then use the Modmanager to install mods.
