Meh. The economics side of it is constantly oversimplified. A pirated copy of bioshock is obviously in direct competition with legit bioshock, but it's also competing with other games, legit and pirated.
Do you think people in any great number actually buy a game they've already pirated? That also hit me as a being more of a sound bite then something that happens often enough to be seriously considered.

Yes, yes I do.

Re: Bioshock, I wonder if I count as a pirate if I download a crack for a game I legitimately bought, or, with a game such as Space Rangers 2, pirate the entire game
after buying it due to DRM restrictions.
Because if I purchased the game, it isn't a lost sale, but I still go into the numbers all weird. Obviously publishers are aware of this type of user if UbiSoft recommended a game crack as a game-fixing patch.

I do. I bought System Shock 2 after getting the full version at a LAN. I downloaded Doom 3 and Quake 4 at least a year after their releases, and bought them shortly afterwards despite the fact I'll never play online. Right now I'm trying to find Prey even though I already have the ISOs and have finished the game thanks to the new Linux client that was just released. I would buy Darwinia if I had some method of paying online; though I haven't downloaded it either.

Well I think we can safely say people on TTLG are exceptions to the rule.
ercles on 20/12/2008 at 18:39
At the same time I think we can also say that this bizarre phenomenon is not exclusive to ttlg users...

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to bump this and mention that it seems that we have a perfect example of how a government can badly handle an attempt to combat internet piracy, in Australia. The government is pushing forwards with a plan to (
http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,28348,24833959-5014239,00.html) censor the internet, including P2P traffic, and there are a lot of people (myself included) who are incredibly pissed about the whole thing.

Oh dear.
That's frankly terrifying.
