DDump makes a copy of the SS2 disc just fine. Turn on the SafeDisc option in Daemon-Tools and there's no problems.
You think forking out several hundred dollars for Windows and installing a couple of third-party applications just to read a CD is no problem?

I don't see how anyone can seriously suggest that a game using your optical drive as a dongle is somehow better than what EA is currently using (one-time activation on installation, no disk check, no phoning home, activation is relinquished on uninstall, no 3rd party TSR). I can understand the hate for Bioshock's multiple layers of protection and for the way EA handled Spore initially, but if every publisher used SecureROM configured the way EA is using it now it would easily be my preferred form of copy protection.

As opposed to, say, not forking out for Windows and sitting there with a box full of interconnected parts?

I found out some time ago that a couple of versions of security programs that don't let you make an image disk of the original cd can be bypassed if you give the interior name of the ISO liek the one that the original disk has. Sometimes it's pretty plain to see, but sometimes it's impossible. It might work for SS I know it worked with Thief 2.

Well I don't own nor do I have any interest in Spore, FIFA 09 or Red Alert 3. Until they release deactivation tools for Crysis Warhead, Mass Effect and Dead Space, EA can go fuck themselves.

What problems have you had deactivating Mass Effect and Dead Space? Due to my current love/hate relationship with DS, I've uninstalled/reinstalled it about 5 times now and haven't had an issue.

But did you reinstall Windows or make any major hardware changes in-between those game installations? I've probably eaten through at least 3 Crysis Warhead activations.
