Just out of curiosity, after playing the Lost City again, I am rather curious as to why/how the mages got down there.
The Lost City was, as I understand it, just that. LOST until Garrett gets the Keeper key and finds the entrance. Thereby unsealing it. Ok, fine.
I can see how it would have been found again later, by the Mechanists (or even the occassional looter. . .) and they started excavations.
However. . .*how* on earth did the Mages get down there? Not only down there, but *ahead* of Garrett, who had just unsealed it and wasted no time getting down in there?
Ok, so I know from a game perspective someone felt the players needed more than eles and burricks to deal with. . .but from a story angle. . .what explanation could this have?

teleportation?

The same way the burricks did, perchance? It seems probable that the Lost City is what drew the Hand to the area in the first place - their search for ancient wisdom.

But if the Lost City was not well known to start with. . .
and it was fairly clear it was *sealed* until Garrett used the Keeper key, so what are the chances of the mages even KNOWING about it until after he got out of there?
I can see he gets some 'ancient' loot, catches their attention and they track down the source, then go down there, or teleport. :) But they're down there the very same night, the very same hours he is?

The Hand was in charge of one of the Talisman's, and from The Lost City, we know they were searching for more of them. Doesn't seem unlikely that they might have researched for a while to find the location of the Others. Mages are typically pretty intelligent.
Plus, I don't know what all this business about being "sealed" is. It just happens the Keepers had the most convenient key to the place. There's bound to be other ways in.

In the gold level Mages Tower, some of the text lying around talks about one mage in particular spending years researching the talismans and having recently discovered a possible location of another one. There was something further about the Lost City though it may not have been referenced by name, maybe called an ancient city or something.

This is one of the problems I had with Thief Gold. In the original Thief there was no mages down there and it made the place seem more lonely and desolate. When they put in the mages in Thief Gold it sort of ruined the whole If-I-get-killed-down-here-no-one-will-ever-know-it, creepy feeling I got when I played that stage.
They shouldn't have moved the masterpiece from it's pedestal.

I think this is how the mages got into the Lost City:
Designer: Are you done with the mages yet? The mission designers are waiting for the models for that bonus mission we want to put in Thief Gold. Hm, what was it called?
Artist: Are you telling me the mages will appear just in Mage Keep?
Designer: Oh yes, that's the name. And yes, we need them just for that mission.
Artist: Hey, I've spent *weeks* designing the textures and 3d models for these freaky elemental mages - and just for one lousy mission?
Designer: Yes.
Artist: I quit. It's against my code of honour, and probably my contract too.
Designer: Whoa, don't play the woman. I'm sure we can come to an agreement.

I think Luthien's got it nailed.
