Duh.... magic!
:laff: Well that I can swallow. . .Specially being elemental mages. Supposedly they'd have enough control of their elemental magic to get through all that earth into the city. But they must have been scrying Garrett to know so soon. "Oh, that thief just opened the door. Lets teleport down there before he gets to far, and kill him if he gets too close to anything we think might be important!"
*grins* Luthien, I think you've got the solution there. . .at least the out of character side of it. Though thats not quite what I was looking for.

I always figured that Constantine's recent flurry of activity somehow made it easier for the Mages to locate the Lost City/Talisman, so that's why you encounter them there.

I concur with Taffme. They shouldn't be there. For this reason I'm glad I played Thief: The Dark Project first.

I figured it was teleportation using old clues about the location or by homing in on the energy from a talisman. Then again, if the Mechanists could find an way in that didn't have anything to do with the sealed passage, why couldn't the Mages?

I played both versions, TDP and Thief Gold, and while the Gold version with the Mages seems more interesting, that is: there is more to do/kill wreak havoc with, the original mission seemed more athmospheric, more creepy as Taffme put it.
But I didn't really think it was that far-fetched that the Mages were already down there. For one, they are attuned to the elements, secondly, they have been searching for those talismans for a long time.
But more importantly:
It is said in the game, that the location and even the ancient city itself was forgotten, but forgotten by whom? By the majority of the people for sure, but who are they, anyway, the run of the mill folks. But there are others who are adept at finding and keeping information: The Keepers , of course, but also the Brotherhood as is glimpsed thorugh in-game papers. And there is this art dealer (Gervasius?) who - if you buy the tip-asks Garrett to look out for some masks. So it at least appears that others- educated people and entrepeneurs know of or at least guess at the existence of the city.
And maybe it is only the rumors of dangers that keeps /has kept them away, as is the case with the walled off sector.

I concur with Meisterdieb, although I haven't played the actual mission, I only ever played TDP, I've watched the mission briefing and parameters. As far as mages are concerned, I think that strays alittle from thief's genre, but that's only an opinion. I definitely got the impression from TDP that other people were aware of the lost city, and avoided it for its dangers such as the creatures and the lava threat, it really is quite bare anyway and of little interest to the untrained eye. I'm also of the opinion the Kurshok citadel and the lost city are two completely separate entities, it doesn't quite sit right with me that they are one and the same in TDS, too many conflicts. OST, let's not go into that again lol
So far on the forums Thief Gold's "bonus" missions haven't exactly received a warm reception, let alone rave reviews, so I'd stick to the notion that the bonus missions were only inserted to spark more interest and increase sales, and the introduction of mages was not originally intended, and became abit of a gimmick. Alot of people here have said they could happily go without the bonus missions as they contribute very little to the thief legacy, so I'm now glad i've gone without :thumb:

But everybody should hear Stephen Russell's singing in the Song of the Caverns.

Wolfboy, they're talking about The Lost City mission, not the Mage Towers mission. It's TLC, but with mages investigating a certain area looking for the Talisman.

Which, of course, is why Garret says "It ain't lost no more". It's a lost city - very few people even know of it's existence, and sure as certain they don't know it's beneath the City. That's why Karras has to use a bloody
submarineto get there.

... I have NO idea where you're getting this from. People usually rave about Song of the Caverns, one of the bonus TG missions.

Based on various excerpts within the game, I also got the feeling a lot of people knew
of it but not necessarily
where it was or how to get to it.

Solabusca you must be reading the wrong thread, everything you've quoted there is correct and from this thread. Instead of quoting me and trying to criticize, why don't you come up with something of your own that adds to the thread.
"Wolfboy" - Solabsuca rofl, i dont even need to criticize your name you've done it for me.
