They forgot to show what the yellow square represents.

Looks fine to me; it's clear and it matches their new aesthetic. What else does it need?
Honestly I think it's alright. I just think it's funny that it probably took a room-full of marketing experts to come up with the most simple possible logo they could've made. Four boxes and a sans serif font. Don't get much more basic than that.

I have always thought that about MS and Google logos.

I like the new logo. It's clear, clean and business-like. The 4-color scheme of the Windows logo, in that 2x2 configuration, is very recognizable and very much a part of Microsoft's branding -- see the Microsoft Office logo. By simplifying the iconic Windows symbol and combining it with a revamped "Microsoft" -- no longer having that little cut to it -- the redone font says "business" but the symbol says "life." (I know, I know, it sounds cheesy, but daily business isn't exactly the most exciting thing in the world.) When you consider how pervasive Microsoft is, this actually makes sense. The business world is very much in Microsoft's pocket -- most peoples' work computers use Windows of some fashion. But there's more to life than just business, and Microsoft has a hand in a lot of things in our daily lives.
Aye, as you say, it does totally reflect the "look and feel" of their new metro design, while still keeping the Windows legacy.

You know I do have a lot of moments where I think "anyone could have designed this shit" (i.e. london olympics logo), but then I remember the good old myspace days of complete artistic freedom and correct myself - no, not just anyone...
