As one who's posted well outside the Thief topic on numerous occasions, and, heh, have been thoroughly punished for it--no not every time, not half the time, but enough to narrow down my less-tedious choices--the Thief forums became the last place to have more joyful escapism, helpfulness, and creative collaboration; until T4 was announced and all collaboration stopped as if T4 was right around the corner, and all those people that were involved dropped TTLG, too, leaving a dried husk of a forum.
The fanboyism came directly from the compounding loss of reasons to be there, but mainly as a stunned reaction to just how many people don't want Thi4f to continue anything but a character that steals. People who had been asserting fan opinion for years suddenly had an epiphany that they didn't care what EM did, reducing a great deal of agreement. It's easy to rip into someone after being insulted in the very place dedicated to appreciation of a specific set of games, while coping badly with loss on top of loss, and feeling betrayed by fellow fans and forum vets who suddenly have nothing good to say about the games they used to be fans of. It's even more complicated than that. Cripes.
Those of us who still enjoy exploring the games have circumvented TTLG and found other sites to maintain the enthusiasm. And like I said earlier, all the knowledgeable people have left. Windows Vista and 7 really made a bad dent in the legacy gaming, too.

Sorry to see a good mod go but I hope Com Chat keeps going, 'spose it's really up to us eh!
Many thanks GBM for your support when I started up a village newspaper, the logo you put together for it still gets printed every month, and I promise not to tell anyone yer Cornish P-{

Yet the core that's stuck to TTLG like a disgusting tumor, the core that influences what goes on here by being the loudest voice in the room, not only hates gaming - most of you have grown to hate the very games that got you here.

If they were given the task to develop a general interest community with a bunch of websites on bar crawling, drinking and social get togethers, HOLY SHIT GUYS this site would go nuclear with activity because someone would actually care.
These comments reveal far more about
Avalon than they do TTLG.
But still, as misguided and axe-grindey as Avalon's comments are, they are a manifestation of a fundamental divide that has long existed in the TTLG community. On one side you've got the Thiefcore, who love their games and want to talk and play and goof around largely in their game universes (at least on TTLG). At the other end of the hall is the Socialization Crew, who enjoy video games in a more casual sense and have their feet planted a little more firmly in the real world (again, at least in regard to TTLG). Not to imply that one side is more game-oriented or grounded than the other, I simply mean that both groups come to TTLG with slightly different intents and communicative desires.
Which is fine, although these different intents and communicative desires inherently cause tension, which can lead to either side grossly mischaracterizing the other, whether it's the Thiefcore stating that the Socialization crew hate gaming and just want to drink (rebuttal: "hey, we like games, we just balance it with other pursuits like going out") or the Socialization Crew poking fun of the Thiefcore for being too hung up on their old video game (rebuttal: "what do you expect, THIS OLD VIDEO GAME IS WHY THE FORUM EVEN EXISTS")
What's bizarre is the divide between these groups isn't even all that absolute; some posters straddle both groups (and many have been known to slowly migrate from one group to the other), and real-life meetups have drawn attendees from both groups to great success. Which isn't so say that the issues between the two groups aren't real, but they're not necessarily the TTLG-killing cancer that certain chip-bearing forumites make them out to be.
Addendum: yes, "Thiefcore" and "Socialization crew" leave a lot to be desired as labels, but they (sort of) get the job done.

Just catching up in this thread - I think the Facebook vs. TTLG argument is kind of ridiculous and overstated, a far more accurate description would be TTLG vs. Commchat. Just doing a quick scan of the boards, I see the following user counts:
CommChat - 10
GenGaming - 22
ThiefGen - 24
Thief FMs - 40
Thief IV - 9
Editor's Guild - 8
Plus about 3-5 other gaming forums with anywhere from 3-7 people.
No offense at all intended to the users who primarily see TTLG as CommChat, but it could probably be deleted tomorrow and the change in traffic overall for TTLG would be very minimal. I'm not criticizing CommChat, hell I come here every day and it can be fun and interesting and goofy, but I think the people who hang here the most tend to think the board revolves around it.
TTLG is still primarily a gaming board, by a pretty huge margin.

Traffic is what makes a website special I suppose.
Should we compare how many threads or posts are in a forum to declare it worthy of continuing?
Also keen to see where the thesis was put forward that TTLG isn't primarily a gaming site? But thanks for beating up that particular strawman whilst strengthening the divide.

Everyone who ever hated commchat with a passion seems to think it looms large over the proceedings around here too (although I think people tend to over estimate that number as well).
I don't understand your point at all really. Was there ever a question TTLG wasn't a gaming board?
