Yay for new blood running the ship! (with due respects to the old guard)
Have to agree 100% with Stitchums here.
So far, a step in a good direction has been taken. Cheers :)

is this a megathread yet?
BrokenArts on 18/5/2012 at 17:20
We'll have to classify that better, how many pages should be allowed in a mega thread. This has gone way off course anyway.

Should be talked about somewhere, anyway.
Re: Megathreads. I don't think moderators need to be closing off threads. What would be helpful is if a thread starts off with some movie or song or game or wahtever, and later on somebody posts a different movie or song, the moderators should advise that that's better off in its own thread and it's going to pull this thread OT. And if someone literally names their thread like "Let's talk about every song you've ever listened to", the moderators can PM the thread-starter and suggest that they rename it just to be about whatever their OP is talking about, and let that set the topic.
And a megathread isn't just more than one thing (it's might be interesting to compare like 5 movies), or a number of pages. IMO it's when the topic is allowed to hold new topics inside itself, what would otherwise be threads in their own right (wandering off by itself is ok if it's like a shitpost thread for fun, but not if the branches are better as their own threads, maybe once or twice, but not after it happens like 4 times), or when the OP explicitly opens up the field and purposefully wants to make a megathread.

I generally agree, and some conversations within the megathreads die out quickly and others get spun out into separate discussions even with the current system. Where I have a particular problem is when discussions then continue and get lost within the megathread despite there being other better places to discuss it - in some cases forums dedicated to the game being discussed.

Number of pages doesn't define something as a mega-thread so much as intent. Megathreads are written with the intention of being a catch-all place to discuss a certain topic, which is bad as (1) it encourages drive-by posting, and (2) it hides actual discussion in a bloated, messy thread.

Megathreads are what gigantic places like Somethingawful do because people posting a new thread for every momentary meme becomes a problem, as far as I understand it.
There's a couple of things they're still good for I guess. People off the cuff posting what they're doing, twitter/facebook status-like seems to generate discussion and everyone jumping on some old game or something now and then. In more hands-on moderation places you can spin that off into its own thread then, which is cool. Seems like it might be a bit much for us. dunno tho. What do the elect think?

Yeah, I know, its a mega thread with everything including the kitchen sink. I'm at work, and don't have time to right now. I would like to start a thread later. Kick around more thoughts and ideas on this, and other issues as well, I may separate some of these posts. More later. Also, to micro manage a mega thread is tedious and boring, we'll have to see how that plays out in the future.

I think we all agree it isn't clear cut at all. There are places where a megathread is useful and appropriate, so I think it's tricky to make a blanket decision about them.
I do feel there's a bit of a buzz around here and it would be a shame if that was lost. I'm inclined to think that if there's a way to accurately get the opinion of regular TTLGers on any particular subject, then that's what we should do. This place is for the people who use it and they should have an input (another word I hate).

I'd rather have a megathread than a single one for every other funny youtube video. Old, nonsensical babble threads like "Almalexia is a psycho" were also good fun. I don't see the big thing about megathreads, even after having that discussion twice, "What are you listening to?" saw a lost of posts as soon as it was revived. And it was fine, I don't see it preventing anyone from starting new threads about specific subjects.
Still, megathreads are good for nothing else and should be discouraged by mods.
