I've split this from the KTHXBYE thread as this is worthy of separate discussion.

I haven't really got anything against megathreads either, but I wish that sometimes instead of posting in the "What are you playing now?" megathread for example, people would dig up the old thread (if one exists) of the game in question, and post there.
And before anyone gets to say it, yes, I'm guilty of that as well. :p

Is there any research on factors related to how/when/why porn makes its way into a megathread?
If not, there should be. ('Scuse me while I do an image search intended to skew the data...)

Agreed.

Agreed Agreed. I just wish the search function and people doing the search worked better sometimes. :p

Thank you. I am happy now.

I'd like to see long sidetracks from original topic split into their own threads. I don't always have time to follow an interesting topic minute-by-minute, and CommChat is most active when it's night for me so there can be 200 new posts when I wake up. That's fine, but if I have to first wade through whole pages of off-topic, I just give up the whole thread.
Maybe you people could change your schedules to Finnish timezone? ;)

This is obviously the uber moderator megathread. I mean cuz, good God, look at all these uber moderators we've got around here now. We're practically lousy with 'em. What the hell were they doing? Handing them out as door prizes at the Circle-K?
...and why ain't I an uber moderator?
edit: gotta give you uber people props. I pressed the post button...and it posted. Haven't seen that around here in about forever now. Great job! :D :thumb:

Here's where we are, as I see it:
First, we need admins who care and are excited to prune and shape TTLG for future growth. Not to knock current admins for what they may or may not be doing behind the scenes, but MsLedd's recent optimization is the first sign I've seen in awhile that this place hasn't been essentially abandoned by the brass. I understand that people move on, real life takes over, etc. but if this place is to thrive it needs active admins, both on a technical level (i.e. keeping the servers purring) and a moderation level (i.e. keeping discourse reasonably civil).
The technical stuff is pretty straightforward and obvious (at least in regard to defining what TTLG needs, not in regard to the actual labor-intensive and yet mostly invisible amount of work needed to achieve it). The moderation stuff is a little more tricky--I'd love active moderation that allows snark and slapping around that is all in good fun, but puts the hammer down fast on threadshitting and activity that discourages participation. I recognize this can be a fine line, but I do think some enforcement is needed to actually make TTLG a place that is reasonably inviting.
Once we have the admins in place, I'd personally like to see abandoned subforums properly abandoned and less popular forums merged, a la ZylonBane's suggestions.
And then, as a final admin-level activity,
I'd personally love to see megathreads banished from TTLG. Lock the existing ones, close down the creation of new ones, watch discussion on TTLG instantly bloom when it's suddenly possible to easily find topics of conversation and contribute to them.
Once all of the above has been done, I think a renewed amount of posting will follow. I certainly know I'd be more inclined to participate, for whatever that's worth.

It's amazing how much stock you guys put into the idea of banning megathreads. I mean, do you really think that will somehow bring back postcounts? Because I find that fascinatingly naive of some otherwise pretty darn intelligent fellows.
Have you even been reading this thread and others like it? (No, because you've been off doing other things, hence your reduced posting.) Here's something to consider: megathreads didn't kill TTLG. Forum entropy and the aging of TTLG's members killed TTLG. If you ban megathreads, we're not going to see a sudden burst of new threads cropping up. Conversation isn't going to magically come alive, because nobody cares anymore. You might have one or two extra threads every couple weeks, that will quickly die off with maybe 5 posts -- just like all the other threads, because TTLG just isn't as active as it used to be. And it's not megathreads' fault -- it would've happened anyway, because nothing lasts forever. We've all gotten jobs and children and prison time and STDs (but I'm repeating myself) and have less and less time for video games, let alone talking about them. Banning megathreads would just be locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen.
And anyway, have you seen CommChat and GenGaming lately? There's new posts in several threads all the time, not just the megathread. If anything it's livelier than I've seen it in some time. So maybe instead of banging that drum all the goddamn time why don't you put your money where your mouth is and make some new threads to go with the ones we've got? 'Cuz the "bitch about megathreads" : "actual content" ratio is looking grim right now.
