What if we could generate an automated megathread that spontaneously culls new posts to existing megathreads (i.e. what are you watching, creative stuff here, etc.) This drain of posts to megathreads would effectively drain the growth rate/life out of them.

It's amazing how much stock you guys put into the idea of banning megathreads. I mean, do you really think that will somehow bring back postcounts? Because I find that fascinatingly naive of some otherwise pretty darn intelligent fellows.
Have you even been reading this thread and others like it? (No, because you've been off doing other things, hence your reduced posting.) Here's something to consider: megathreads didn't kill TTLG. Forum entropy and the aging of TTLG's members killed TTLG. If you ban megathreads, we're not going to see a sudden burst of new threads cropping up. Conversation isn't going to magically come alive, because
nobody cares anymore. You might have one or two extra threads every couple weeks, that will quickly die off with maybe 5 posts -- just like all the other threads, because TTLG just isn't as active as it used to be. And it's not megathreads' fault -- it would've happened anyway, because nothing lasts forever. We've all gotten jobs and children and prison time and STDs (but I'm repeating myself) and have less and less time for video games, let alone talking about them. Banning megathreads would just be locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen.
And anyway, have you seen CommChat and GenGaming lately? There's new posts in several threads all the time, not just the megathread. If anything it's livelier than I've seen it in some time. So maybe instead of banging that drum all the goddamn time why don't you put your money where your mouth is and make some new threads to go with the ones we've got? 'Cuz the "bitch about megathreads" : "actual content" ratio is looking grim right now.

I think curtailing megathreads too harshly is a mistake. The ship has sailed as far as people stopping to search, composing something sensible to provoke further discussion and other people checking in and doing the same. The old days were about maximising word value, conserving server space and bandwidth. Ya still have to do these things, when it comes down to it. But no one acts like you do any more, and the likes of twitter made it the backbone of their whole service.
They're annoying in a lot of ways, but their casual immediacy is very much of the times and useful when they turn up actual discussion . So the only basic way to deal with them that I can see is management.
How exactly I'm not sure, but the rolling bi-monthly collection seemed like a good idea so they don't get too big. Spinning off conversations into their own threads seems like a good idea too (I would actually leave the original post behind and maybe add a link to the new thread).
All of which just sounds like work for the mods, I know. But it strikes me as the way to go for now.

I'd personally love to see megathreads banished from TTLG
So, as an example - should this thread be closed or split at this point, because it has veered into discussion that would be better placed in the "Forums" forum, where originally it was simply GBM announcing his resignation. At this point we're in "How should the TTLG Forums be organised?".
At least that is my view on active moderation - observing topic shift and chopping accordingly. I think it's worth just batting about a few ideas on what should be tidied up.

I've split this from the KTHXBYE thread as this is worthy of separate discussion.
I should really read the forums properly before suggesting that what you've already done should be done... It would be nice if there were some sort of "thread was split here" marker with a helpful link.
Incidentally, I don't think there is an easy answer to the megathread. There is much left to the discretion of the moderator. Personally I'd have to weigh up whether two separate discussions were emerging going on in parallel, say. In some cases it's tricky to make a clean break, but I believe you can select a bunch of posts and turn them into a new thread, effectively teasing out the subthreads.

edit: gotta give you uber people props. I pressed the post button...and it posted. Haven't seen that around here in about forever now. Great job! :D :thumb:
I would much rather have uber member after my name. Matter of fact you can put it on my tombstone.
And now that you mention it I haven't seen that thing where the last word of a line is repeated at the first of the next line of text either.
