Those comments on Republic remind me of an old C64 game called (

Similar idea, you are a random guy trying to gain followers to become Shogun over Japan, and even after reading the manual the game is really opaque about what to do, and you'll wander around aimlessly. I finally won it, but it wasn't easy.

Oh god. Yes, this. I DID read the manual and it still felt like I was swimming uphill through setting custard.
SECONDED.

Gothic 2 took a while to get the hang of, if only because its control scheme was so unconventional.

I remember when I tried to play WW2Online.
I didn't last a day before throwing in the towel. Fuck that game.

Another former needlessly frustrated 'Republic' player here.
Also, 'Sacrifice'. It was almost too easy until it became nigh impossible. I'm sure it's that not bad for RTS fans, but I'm not one for the most part.
I still remember crying tears of rage trying to figure out WTF while "playing" 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' on the NES.

Damn right, I never finished the final level of Sacrifice. It was just too hard fighting an enemy who could basically steal your units in no time.
Also Interstate 76 had some pretty hard missions, especially the race which took place in a dream and one mission where you had to fight two tanks and police cars with autoaiming turrets on their roofs. :o

Took me quite a while to get the hang of System Shock 2 (but you already knew that).

Galactic Civillizations 2 is not actually that complex of a game (at least not when compared to other 4X games) - but its learning curve is ridiculous because the game gives you no feedback as to when your doing things right, and it takes a really long time before the player can do anything important. The confusing interface and counter-intuitive gameplay doesn't help, a lot things feel like they would only make sense if you've already played MOO or MOOII.
However, by FAR the most difficult learning-curve I've ever seen is Star Control 2 - WOW that game is hard.

I know I'm probably unique in this regard, but for some reason I found flying planes in
GTA: San Andreas (PC version) effectively to be extremely difficult and frustrating at first. That stupid "fly through the rings" training mission you're required to complete had me cursing at the screen and nearly breaking my keyboard.

Yeah, I fucking hate games like that.
XIII is another example in my opinion. It's moderate to piss easy all the way up until the final boss, who can suddenly kill you in about two seconds flat. After dying a dozen or more times, I finally gave up and never bothered to finish (the story was lame anyway).
