So I recently got linked to (
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2010/100323e.pdf) this Nintendo document (pdf), which makes one very interesting claim:
Quote:
Nintendo Co., Ltd... will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending in March 2011, on which
games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.
The whole 3D thing is something they've had their eye on for quite some time (Virtual Boy!), so that they're trying again isn't a huge surprise. That it doesn't need special glasses is something I'll need to see to believe. It's supposed to be backwards-compatable with DS and DSi games, too, and I'm wondering if it will somehow do a faux-3D with those games, the way the GameBoy Color colorized old b&w carts.
Something to keep an eye on, anyway, especially if it's launching within the next year. Guess I may have to actually pay attention to E3 news this time around.

We'll see if the backward compatibility doesn't hold back the platform's specs. At least we know it's ARM/ARM, and very probably dual screen, but they had better buff up the hardware.
As for the 3D, I'm trusting Nintendo to design something that works solidly. I'm quite curious to see how it works... I'm afraid it's probably just stereoscopic tracking with cameras.
And as for the games, I'm trusting third party developers to waste the console's potential again. Yay for 3D ponies and 3D manga-style underage adventures. :U

I'd think so. Unfortunately it's quite restrictive on controls because it minimizes touch-screen use: the hand can't come in front of the camera, and rubbing the stylus is done on a 2D plane, forbidding any kind of dragging things across if the 3D is even just barely present.
Also, constant jitter because of the gaze tracking algorithm (can be improved) and constant recalibration (no such luck).

Yes, because
all third party games on Nintendo platforms are shovelware aimed at children. Inacurrate sweeping generalisation is inaccurate. There are plenty of proper games on both Wii and DS from third parties.
With the recent Nintendo consoles/handhelds I'd prefer it if developer focus on making good games that work decently on the platform first, rather than building games around a platform's gimmicks. If that means that some potential is wasted then so be it, at least there's a higher likelihood that a game doesn't suck and/or is shallow and vapid.

I read that Nintendo are working with nVidia to bring a modified Tegra system-on-a-chip solution to the new DS. This is very good news. Tegra is a pretty beefy little package.
As for the 3d effect, the DSi game linked above uses the camera for the effect, but more than likely Nintendo will bring their experience with the Wii remote to the system and incorporate accelerometers to accomplish the same effect (if indeed that is the effect they are shooting for).

@EvaUnit02
When did I say that all third party games were shovelware? I implied that the sheer amount of third party shit and subsequent demonstration of economic viability buried the potential of the platform. Learn to read.
Shit games full of Naruto and Barbie selling like hotcakes + grotesque amount of piracy of good games = ridiculous amount of interesting games despite low development times and costs (see : Renegade Kid).
Also, "X Y is X" makes you look like a moron.

While this is all possibly true, it's still sweet-looking, and definitely a step in the right direction.

As is your strawmanning of his comment, you poppycock.
OT: If they do this with an accelerometer it will be sweet. Controlling in 3D will be a whole new issue though. The stylus can be
such great fun (see DS Zelda for funtimes).

Please don't do this.
