Actually, I thnk the flare idea is cool. Still lke my radio idea though. :)

I was thinking that popping a flare wasn't in line with Thief-style (more battlefield genre than anything else), but yes flares do exist so it wouldn't be much of a stretch.

Yeah, the flares didn't mesh well, especially with gameplay. There wasn't much use for them for all there were in missions, except for experimenting and navigating a rare pitch-black area. Not much that can be set on fire is useful to do so. Igniting all those powder-kegs and banners didn't amount to any significant Thiefy gameplay, as amusing as it can be.

That's mostly because so many people cheated by turning their gamma up. A fan mission from within the past year, "DarkStone Mine" really showed what can and should be done with them.... all by turning ambient lighting off.
Which I'm surprised I've not seen out of a DarkMod mission yet, given how the doom 3 engine loves to make it so a 100 watt bulb in the middle of a white walled room can't even reach the walls if the distance is more than six feet. Loved all those pitch black rooms with running lights around every wall and dozens of other light sources and metal walls.

The low-usability of the flares and flammables in the OMs exists regardless of gamma settings, and I posted with gamma in mind, which was beside the point. They are most useful in the very first mission, during the first playthrough (or when the map has been forgotten), because of one very dark stretch of corridor, and...the lack of fire arrows.
Forcing total darkness and removing fire arrows is what would make the light they give off useful, or if a mission called for using a flare to signal someone, or if something needed to be burned with one (yet Garrett can relight candles somehow in TDS)--in other words, silent redundancy for some fire arrow uses. Most missions would still not benefit much from flares, and like turning lights on and relighting torches, never has an in-game use to truly benefit the player. And no, I don't care to see a bunch of scenarios created to justify having flares in an official Thief game.

For Thief 4, I was thinking about some guards using a steam-punkish, primative radio system. Certain guards would be wearing obvious backpacks with antennas.
what the fuck are you smoking ?

Wow, really? You have played Thief, right? You know, where robots walk around, people are turned into servants wearing mechanical masks...

well,Thief2 have TOO MUCH steampunk stuff as for me...Thats why I never completed Soulforge OM :p
But lets suppose robots in T2 is metal + gears filled with some magic, but what is radio ? magic too ? this is ridiculous :
-This is Benny,I just saw Garret,he is in lord Bafford's mansion, repeat,Garret is in lord Bafford's mansion- :p

Radio was used in Thief 2 in the form of a signal to activate the slaves. You had manipulate radio-tower looking structures.
Radio is not out of the realm of Thief. If you do not like Thief 2, then I guess that's your opinion, but its canon.

Enemy tech would include single shot pistols that are powered by compressed steam. IT would fire sharp bolts.
I would expect enemies to be wearing mechanical eye magnifying glasses attached to helmets. Along with metal plating on the back of the head to protect against blackjacking.
Also apart from undead/spiders/guards/thugs/mages/robots/ I would expect there to be fire breathing monkeys.
well not really.
All I would want from Thief 4 is more old school burglarizing/sneaking/stalking/eaves dropping/peeping tom..ing/ and Garrett talking to himself and perhaps even some sword fighting?
