The old client player has been replaced with a browser/desktop icon system that's buggier than DromEd. Random crashes, prompts to re-install the client every time you log in, near complete in-compatibility with Firefox (despite being the recommended browser, etc.). Is it normal to switch systems on a paying customer base and use them to test your beta project?
Is there another service with the same type of game variety? I'm using it for some oldies (Hitman/SpinterCell/Psychonauts) but the real draw was that they have about a hundred really cool kids games that made it well worth the subscription price. :(

Jesus Christ, yes, but that was a botched transition. It was about on par with the Bioshock launch. I think we can blame the company that bought GT off Turner.
They seem to have most of the bugs resolved at least on my end, though. The biggest issue is that, if you're using Firefox, you can't have the client open in multiple tabs or it will crash. Is that what's killing it for you? Using just one tab works for me.

Any time hit 'escape' to go to a game menu, I crash to desktop and my whole rig locks up. I also can't load saved games in several instances, and some games don't even load at all. :(

The 'escape' bug is listed in the documentation--not that that excuses it--but there is a way around it: don't launch a game from a maximized browser window, and the bug goes away.
Have you posted much of this in the tech support forums? As completely fucked as the transition was, there are some good people working there, and they fixed the problems I was having in launching a few games. The biggest help has been telling Vista's retarded data execution prevention "safety" to ignore GT: (
http://support.gametap.com/selfservice/template.do?id=499) Several games crashed on me until I did that.

I cancelled my subscription over this shit.

Fringe - I've got six separate issues that happen randomly. I've spent the last week playing less than one hour total, but about five hours so far trying to fix bugs. I'm literally paying them to beta test their shitty new system. I have no inclination to spend any more time sending logs, tweaking my browser, uninstalling Mozilla plug-ins, etc. when the service worked fine before the switch. I'm also canceling my account - what they've done is the height of bad business and taking advantage of loyal customers, regardless of how helpful the admins on the forums are (and they are good guys/gals). It's simply not worth the effort.
So I ask again, is there a similar game service out there with a comparable variety of games?

Not that I know of, though I have heard bits on the internet that one may exist. I, too, am curious. I loved that shit before the change. I was introduced to some incredible games that I would never have had the opportunity to try otherwise.
