Give me a moment to cool down... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
So then... *ahem*, i was out for a week, and it turns out that it's the week Eidos chooses to announce Thief 4. So like any good taffer i goes to their forums and regsiters. And lo and behold the very VERY annoying argument. There are two camps there:
1. The old taffers that started with the TDP demo back in 1999, that played the first two games and loved them and were subsequently dissapointed with TDS's absurdities, such as auto aiming knockouts, loot glint, no rope arrows, no swimming, small levels, loading screens...
2. The new taffers that first encountered the Thief series with TDS, and then played the first two games and didn't like them because of the graphics, or because they were too hard or what not.
Normally i'd see nothing wrong with that (apart from being personally annoyed with them), but they are a large part of the ones raising their voice on the official forums and might influence the opinions of the developers. And that would make me so :grr:

You are so right. I need to register there too, no doubt!

I hope they won't confuse the hell out of developers :joke: What to do? Who to please? OK LET'S NOT DO ANYTHING!
I can't get my purist eldar newbie-bashing opinions injected in Eidos forums, because I still haven't received that damned confirmation email :erg:

The thing that blew me away with Dark Project back in 1999 was how fresh (in a smelling of rats sort of way) and unexpected it all was. The art direction, AI, game mechanics, sound and the whole vibe of the place were way off the dial. I really hope that Thi4f is as different from 1 and 2 as it is from 3. If anyone asks what I'd really like to see, rather than adding cool new features, is for Thief paired down as far as possible, but with a much more detailed, interactive, physics heavy, game world.
I can sympathise with anyone struggling to fall instantly in love with Dark Engine era Thief. Like you say it ain't getting any younger, the default key mapping (in T1 particularly) is ungainly and so on. T2 got a bit too huge and wandering all over the place at times too. Though I still reckon there's enough charm in there to win people over if they give it chance. Updating the tech and cleaning up the user interface shouldn't be a sticking point for thi4f.
Did people really think Dark Project was too hard?
All that said, a lot of the things you mention were surely retrograde steps. I can't imagine anyone discovering Thief for the first time on Xbox was any more impressed by tiny levels, loading zones and deadly water than I was.

You'd be surprised.

The thing about Thief is that is makes you think not just react. That seems to be difficult for many gamers. They don't want to take the time to puzzle out the best way to do something. They just want to 'beat the game'. People like that will never appreciate T1 & T2 or relish spending 4 hours playing one map.

Frankly, I started the series with Thief 2 and found Thief 1 rather hard to get in to (I think it was the zombies and such), so I understand how hard it is going backwards from an even more different look and feel.
Nonetheless, it is worth doing. Thief 2 remains the pinnacle of the series for me, although the plot and characters leave something to be desired, the missions are classic and the Dark Engine utilised to its (then) maximum potential.

This is what I'm thinking. A simple retread with worked over graphics wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but why stop there? We already have Thief 1 & 2, along with a plethora of excellent FMs for all our ourschool Thiefy needs. What we need now is something new.
EM, my task to you is to look deeply into what made Thief so great, but don't adhere so much to the old games you end up recreating them. You've got an excellent series with as rich a backstory and setting as you could ever hope. I say you run with it.

Forgive me for not quite understanding exactly to whom you're referring in your last paragraph, but comprehension, like memory, seems to dim with age. Are you hissy with the opinions of the 'oldtaffers', the 'newtaffers', or both?
I think there's a good balance of both types of opinions in the T4 forum as well as at the Eidos forums, and I think EM will get the overall picture of our perceived pros/cons regarding all three Thief games. I have a feeling they'll also be keeping an eye on the other Thief forums as well. We (TTLG)
do have our own representative Taffer working as a liaison with EM and I find that very comforting because it means that at least we'll be represented. Whether or not EM chooses to pay attention and take
any of our opinons (including those of the Eidos Forum members) to heart is another matter entirely.

hi all,
Im oldtaffer - literally : 29 yrs old - have played since the beginning, replayed so many times that I couldnt event count it. Actually, and excuse me for saying this, I ve never paid much attention to all those thief forums/communities and so - probabely I've missed a lot.. But now I feel like its my "thief fan" duty to register on eidos forum and help in the battle against newtaffers ideas - those mo..er..ers think only about fancy graphics and want to make another GTA from what is our (almost) religion!
Lets kill them! (in a virtual way) - please everyone go and register on eidos and make them hear your voice!
