@Gillie- I definitely agree that we shouldn't tell the newbies to taff off just because they don't agree with us, it's normal to have varying opinions on stuff (even among those who have been playing since day one). But still, don't judge people just on their age, that's every bit as bad as penalizing someone for playing DS first. I am 18 and didn't even find out about Thief 'til years after it came out, but I finally found out and, after playing it for the second time (the first time I blundered through slaughtering just about everyone and really having an awful time), I, like so many, fell in love with the incredible masterpiece that is The Dark Project and have been hooked ever since.
I was not Judging her age never not at all. I said because she was so young she might not have got it! or understood it, like when I first played TDS. I do not judge anybody on their age! who play. Just it is hard to experience the meaning of the game at 6years old so young. Just this now ridicules end of
So @Jilly The Taffer do not think that.

Glad to hear it! Good to know that I just misunderstood you.

Your right, I didn't fully understand the concept of Thief, I've explained further up the thread.
No harm done Gillie ;)

Did people really think Dark Project was too hard?
My friend couldn't get out of lord bafford's basement for ages (I lent it to him a week ago). Another tried killing everyone first -- I then informed him that he's supposed to sneak through. He decided to attempt easy mode and wasted his water arrow supply before getting out of the servants' quarters. He gave up on it soon after. Fortunately, the first one is still playing. :)
This is similar to when I got one guy to play Fallout 1 and he gave up on it saying it's too slow. I kind of agree, but only because the bastard vault dweller refuses to walk faster.
My point is, yes, it's hard for people nowadays. I'm often impressed by even older games myself -- I found many NES era titles practically fascist. Guardian Legend especially.

*sigh*
Yes, many times I've tried to get my friends into Thief, starting with Dark Project obviously.
But, alas, they couldn't hack it. They prefer Farcry and Halo and Prince of Persia and Guitar Hero...:grr:
Only my boyfriend stuck with it though. And he is now a Taffer :sly:

I played Thief games in this order:
1. TDS
2. TDP
3. TMA
How I sort the games by liking (the best is with number 1):
1. TDS
2. TMA
3. TDP
What I liked in the games:
1. TDP - dark atmosphere
2. TMA - robing rich houses instead of running from monsters, rope and vine arrows (in DP I barely used them)
3. TDS - 3rd view, dynamic shadows, graphics, storyline, climbing gloves, arc arrows
What I didn't like in the games:
1. TDP - running from monsters, cave levels
2. TMA - n/a
3. TDS - unswimmable water
Favorite missions:
1. TDP - Return to the Haunted Cathedral, Thieves' Guild
2. TMA - First City Bank and Trust, Life of the Party
3. TDS - Robbing the Cradle, Moira's House
Worst missions:
1. TDP - Escape
2. TMA - Trace the Courier
3. TDS - n/a

When I quickly read the first post many days ago I had already written a reply about how... deficient (to say the least) this division of the community is. But then I read carefully and noticed that it just refers to some supposedly existant phenomenon at the international Eidos forum which I cannot really judge.
So, I played the first two games a couple of times before TDS, was a dispraiser of its flaws (mainly English language and loading zones) for months and finally played it and got immersed to an extent that I had to like it. So I guess I'm out of this old vs new taffers thing.
