The Night Watch. Mission 1: Infiltration Jan. 28/07 - by Fidcal

Phew. Finally finished this mission. Great work, Fidcal. I love the use of the glove to get her to follow you. It seems to work much better than the frob person technique. (not to mention I could set her to follow while I was looking the other way)
It was a hard mission. . .and I ended up having to scour this thread a few times trying to figure out how to
get Gwendolyn past the guard at the garden gate. Every time I tried to pass he screamed about murder. :P Took me ages to realize I needed to wake her up first
.
The south portcullis gate key also gave me some trouble, but I finally found it, and with it some other possibilities opened up. lol
And I only got smooshed on the munitions lift once! Though that was partly due to not moving back fast enough after hitting the button.
The only 'beef' I have, is why on earth was that one elite guard in the wooden hall so touchy? If I was in the garden corridor and he saw me, or heard Gwendolyn he'd come running and kill me (and her), yet it was clearly a place this new guard was not questioned by the other guards. IE, the gate guard there didn't mind me being there, neither did the crying guy (if the guy crying in the corner notices anything at all) so why would the elite guard as long as I didn't step beyond that? Even the guy at the foot of those spiral stairs didn't seem to mind if I came into the room or went under the stairs, so long as I didn't come up to him or try the gate. Just seems a bit odd logically speaking. Or did I miss some reasoning there? :)
I did, however, like how you worked the fact that they'd attack her into the story as well. Made it quite interesting to get her somewhere safe, and think out my route before I moved her. Good job! :thumb:
Kept me busy, and out of trouble for a good six hours, that mission. Maybe a bit longer. Was up until 5am again, darn it! lol

Elentari : Yes I like that double stealth thing - for me it is one of the most replayable parts.
The thing about some guards ignoring you while others attack is slightly fudged but it is not always easy to act out a believable story with the limits of the game and my technical abilities. My concept is that the elite guards strictly follow their orders while the common grunts are more easy going.
The main kitchen area and courtyard are easy - you work there and are accepted. The area outside the garden is a grey area. The gate guard there is a grunt. He will know you work there - he can see you through the gate earlier on - he doesn't know all your orders in detail at any moment - where you are allowed to go - nor does he care too much. He might be alarmed if he saw you pointing a bow or carrying a body but not otherwise.
The elite go by the book. Orders is orders. Generally if any of them see anyone who should not be there then they attack without question. One exception is the spiral stair guard near the kitchen. His orders are to guard the stair. He does not care if you come and go in front of him or wear a pink top hat. He normally warns you that it is private property. Meaning of course, what he is guarding - the stair. It might seem odd that you go under the stair but that is not his concern. Maybe the cook asked you to get a barrel or something from there. He is only interested in his orders to let nobody go UP the stair. He is no mere barrel guard. What he is guarding is obviously much more important. The astute player will pick up more hints than the readables alone provide.

lol that makes sense, Fidcal. I wasn't sure if it was technical there or part of the story. I did read about the elite guards being more. . .enthusiastic about their duties than the regular guards, but it was a bit confusing when one guard said yes, and that other said no. By the time I was done the mission I was really ready to whack that guy upside the head. I even had to watch when the nurse went to see Gwen - wasn't sure if he was going to rush out and kill her too. Though I suppose the nurses would be allowed nearly anywhere, given their duties.
So far though I'm loving the gameplay. I may, perhaps, even bump up the difficulty to director's cut. :D (Was playing on expert. I always play on expert. . .but hey. lol)
I also found the face in the display room that cries 'help me!' a little maddening (in a good way!). I wanted to help! Hoping that we revisit this issue later in the story. lol
Also having the children running around and on the cart was cool. I always think these games need more 'normal' life, including children. Although I did have to wonder why these kids were up so late. Surely it was past their bedtime? :D Then again, maybe it was still early evening. Or their parents were busy. lol
I'm probably looking at another few late nights. Darn it! *tries to beat Fidcal over the head with a pillow* You've successfully interfered with my sleep now, and are diving me insane with the desire to make my own FM beyond my current skills! :laff: I don't know whether to thank you or tell you to go to the corner! You really need a warning on these things. "Caution, these missions are highly engrossing and may trigger the creative urges in you."
*grins* I'll try to start the next mission earlier tonight.

Question about the munitions/display case area:
I managed to lure the guard out and then sneak in behind him when he went back inside. I was not, however, able to get his key. So I'm in the anteroom, I got the loot in the display case, and now I'm stuck. I can't open any of the doors because I didn't nab the key. I've been trying to lean through the window to get the key off the guard standing in the guard room, but so far I haven't been able to get it. I do have an earlier saved game. Do I just need to load it? I think I trapped myself.
Thanks!

carist: I'm pretty sure that without a key you are stuck.

I'm pretty sure that without a key you are stuck.I thought so. Oh, well. And here I thought I was being all clever. :tsktsk: But at least I've got a relatively recent saved game to go back to. Thanks.

This was a great mission good fun. I played on hard.

I found most got as far as taking Gwendaline to her bed
I did get all the secrets.
I could not though
Figure the elevator. I tried climbing it. No wonder I could get no further. The had to read how to shoot the buttons.
I got as far as getting To take
Gwendoline to her bed. I carried her there. The brought her around at the door.
Thanks Nightwalker!! for the help.:) I could not figure what to do after.
I missed the book and what to do!,to get her help.
Also I did not need it on hard. I got the Golden dragon top of the spire
I knew it was there. Thanks again Nightwalker.. How to get there.
I did not fall once.:thumb:
I found the pulsatingwall room and poem?Could not work it out
I got a great screen shot!. I threw some crates at the wall and they stuck like a ladder to the wall.

Thanks Gillie. :thumb: That wall message is repeated in the little book and you now have a copy in your inventory through all the missions so you can refer to it when you want. The book is mostly to throw light on the story as it unfolds but includes hints so is worth just looking through now and again if you get stuck in later missions to see if there is a page or two relevant to where you are. But on Hard and Expert there should be enough clues without anyway.

Skullduggerist:
The equipment objective should have checked when you looked at your equipment. It's the looking that should trigger it. I have never known it fail. Even if you now have all the equipment try standing there in the centre of the watchtower level, and look down at an angle and move over where the arrows were. Let me know if it still does not trigger.
Add me to the list. I tried everything and cannot get the weapons objective to check off either.
