*Googling 'Майдан Незалежності'*
... every TV, radio, and newspaper is now the central square of Kiev? What am I missing here? Vodka?

You know, the name of this square has some significant meaning. Especially now.
Almost 100 people died there in the last 2 days.
I have no idea if you're mocking this fact or my poor language skills...

I wish all the best to the Ukrainian people, they're facing a terrible damned if I do, damned if I don't situation. On the one hand, the widespread corruption and allegiance of the current government to the RF knows no bounds and have been continuously stomping on the rights and freedom of the people with blind defiance; on the other hand, Europe and its widespread illness has much less to offer to the economic stability of the country than what Moscow is willing to put on the table. I hope them guys manage to oust the power in place while finding solutions to live a little better.

No, I truly had no idea what you were talking about. When I Googled 'Ogre of Ukraine', all that came back in the news was that Jim Henson's son had died. So, I tried 'Майдан Незалежності' to see what that would offer--still nothing.
Now I know what you're talking about--though I had only heard a brief mention of the violence being played out there on NPR here.

Would you trade your homeland's independence for some amount of money? Would you like your national laws dictated by some foreign officials? Would you like some stranger telling you how to live?

Perhaps I should have added Auden's poem title: "August 1968".

I might try to reach a compromise if the context is right. But here, facing people who can put political rivals in jail on a whim or slip a healthy dose of Polonium in their drinks, I would definitely not. I'm just sad that the Ukrainian people won't be able to turn to anyone for help once they get rid of Yanukovych.

I've completely lost track of what's going on over there.
It seemed like things were alright only a little while ago (it was probably a couple of years now), then there's riots on the news.
Well, not on the news, on some remote corner of the news site since there's no Australian angle.

Condolences for those who've lost their lives over the past couple of days. I've been following the events in the Ukraine since before Christmas, but now all hell's really broken loose and indeed it looks like something out of the '89 revolutions.
Unlike those events, though, here we're dealing with a more divided society along the East-West line and that's a concern. Best of luck to them, hope the violence subsides quickly and gives way to a democratic process. I'd like to see Yanukovic ousted and the Ukraine turn around and enter the association agreement with the EU, but ultimately it needs to go to the free popular vote of those involved.
