The OpenGL and D3D renders. - by Eberon

Someone brought this up in a recent thread. They said that if a player isn't using the OpenGL render, he or she doesn't know what he or she is missing.
So what's the difference? I have tried to glean a difference myself, but I have been unable to for the most part. I think that the models look a little better, I can say that, but the shadows, as far as I remember, looked weird.
Also, has anyone ever heard of/tried importing improved OpenGL renders from UT? I tried it once and the game crashed on start :\

When using OpenGL, I get a few frames per second more, and everything seems to be a bit smoother. A lot less stuttering. I find everything to be more defined and crisp, especially the edges of things, which are less jagged. I think the reflections look better as well. Mostly, it's pretty subtle, but it's there.
The OpenGL drivers for Deus Ex are infact, modified Loki drivers made by those folks specifically for Deus Ex.

I think it also depends heavily on which graphic card your using; Depending on how the driver implements the effects, you´ll get different quality and frame rates. So theres no way to know which looks better on your machine, except trying it out.

I remember trying it on my machine once (Open GL that is). It looked horrible - it was way too bright and it didn't seem to make the slightest bit of difference to my frame rate. For the sake of comparison I have an Athlon 850Mhz, 128Mb RAM and a Geforce 2 GTS 64Mb graphics card. I much preferred D3D mode but all this talk has made me want to go back and try Open GL again just to confirm that it looked bloody awful.

I tried the OpenGL drivers but apparently my D3D card doesn't support them - I have an Guillemot MaxiGamer Cougar card (nVidia TNT2 processor + 32 mb ram). Trying OpenGL crashes Deus Ex.
Tweak as I might, I've never been able to cure myself of my chief DX woe: after 1 or 2 area transitions, and/or 1 or 2 save games, the game goes from running smooth as silk to jerky with lots of hard drive chugging. My system specs are PII-450, 128 MB memory, Win2000 Pro. I plan to up the memory, which will help, but I wonder if it will fix this problem?
