Wooo, we sound a little sore there. You didn't get into it. So what? So the discussions about it are intellectually bankrupt, riiiight. As for said discussions, well, whatever the level of intellectual enrichment you find them to be at, they're to be expected. Tough call to deny that it throws up more to think about - and I mean that as much in form as content, which is obviously, maybe too obviously, trying to provoke thought - than most games outside the margins.
I am sore: I regret spending money on it. I'm more annoyed at myself for not checking it out properly first, but the reason I did so is that I normally really like these kinds of games. My criticisms of it have nothing to do with its intellectual content.

Will I get any spoilers if I read any of these walls of words?
june gloom on 22/3/2009 at 21:44
Why do you ask? It's not like you read anyway.

No, not in this thread. But there is a big 'spoiler' around which the game revolves, and it's very hard to discuss the game without mentioning it, so be careful where you read.

Here's one of those spoilers Ajare mentiones:
Have the people who made this never had a fun sexual experience in their lives? It even ended badly for the ditzy girl on the right who runs like some sort of spasticated disco dancer
That threat to tip over into a pit of goth made good with the Ruby girl. On vinyl: I like my music engraved in black. On cigarettes: They say they make your life shorter, I should smoke. On knives: Cut my wrists, veins or rivers valleys blood fuck knows some shitty deathjournal shit about blood, veins and misery. I hope they were trying to uh, capture the unhappy adolescent experience or something there.
Still, I'm kind of hooked. The music is even better than I thought, I withdraw all misgivings and allegations of cheese. With gimpy goth Ruby, there was different elements in the soundtrack each time I approached the playground. Seems like there's some sort of modular system at work.

But it's not a pleasant experience. You won't like what the game forces upon you at times - and of course, it was designed that way, to make you feel as helpless as the character you're playing. Most people won't like that.
I think you're taking this as essentially positive while pointing out how it can be taken quite the other way, but I'm not sure. Personally, I think this is a good thing. Like you imply with the helplessness of the character, it's a decision for the sake of the whole and not a submission to the player.
Yep, I'm taking it as a positive as it works in context, and I sort of admire it because of the risks it takes.
However, I can see why other people wouldn't like it for exactly the same reasons; and the game is perhaps more than a little obnoxious in how it wilfully disregards contemporary gaming's stance at "empowering" the player. It's a thin line to tread. And it's likely to trample on some toes on the way because of the, er, path it takes.
I've still got to play more of it, though, and I will sooner or later. It's been an unpleasant yet compelling experience so far, sort of like exploring the dark and grimy apartments of Silent Hill 2 but without a torch.
So yeah, it's basically an odd way of saying I like it, but at the same time, I really don't. :D

Totally agree on the point of it being a thin line. With the ditzy girl on the far right of the apartment (scarlett?) for some reason i just didn't find very much in the woods, and ended up having to cover a lot of ground to break out of the blair witch style circles i seemed locked into, and after half an hour of that i was almost spitting at the screen to spite the run camera. There's definitely a compromise to be reached.
Funny you should mention sh2 - i thought the same thing. The apartment scene went too far, as forcing any player not masochistically inclined to adjust their screen brightnes always does, whereas the effect of the claustrophobic camera angles actually justified the cost of my irritation.

It's nice seeing this game getting a mention here! :D
I'm a member of Tale of Tales and I moderate their forums. I've always had a thing for TOT and I love their game, (
http://tale-of-tales.com/TheEndlessForest/index.html) The Endless Forest :o (Been playing that thing since April 2006!)
They appear to have cocked something up, (technically), so if you have problems running The Path, you might need to fix the shortcut!
Quote:
"The Path" shortcut that is always in the game directory ALWAYS points to "C:\Program Files\The Path\PathViewer.exe" no matter where you install the game. I always install games to "C:\Games\" so this shortcut is broken for me by default.
Also, the shortcut needs to have Q3DStart.q3d at the end, so it looks like this...
"C:\Program Files\The Path\PathViewer.exe" Q3DStart.q3d
A patch should be available soon, so do check (
http://tale-of-tales.com/forum/index.php) the forums from time to time.

I think I cocked up by buying it without noticing that it doesn't work with integrated graphics cards. I'm using a laptop right now.

Hey Sluggs, what does "shader characters" do in the options? It's disabled by default, I've been running with it enabled, and I can't really see any difference in appearance or performance one way or the other.
