As there has been much dissent over the changes in the reboot, what elements would make a worthy successor of the past games? For me, I just can't imagine a Thief game without Stephen Russell. I'd also like to see a return of the rope arrows, which I hear will be in the new game? I would like a game with an overall minimalist approach and focus on immersion.

I'm saddened that they're not going to be using supernatural themes. The magic really enhanced the "class divide" feeling, where the rich sat upon realityhax while the poor scraped the floors. It added a lot to the medieval steampunk atmosphere. That, and I loved the undead levels.
What I'd like to see is a living city that reacts to the choices you make in missions, and in the hub. Picking pockets in the streets might lead to an increase in the guard patrols in that area, while murdering your way through a mission might cause another section to be emptied as people move away from the violence, reducing your looting options. It would reward you for being a proper thief, while still letting you take the "easy" way of assassinating everyone in a guard uniform.

I always loved the weird little things in Thief, the like the electrical generators and lamp posts. I can take toned down but I hope the new game to incorporate those defining, stand out elements.

This. Though apparently there will be a horror level, and someone mentioned the supernatural elements might be toned down but not entirely removed. If they do remove them, it will be another nail in the coffin in this disaster :(

The correct answer to this is a full design document and work bible.
