There has to be a reason publishers don't release source code for old games with great communities... I just don't know what it is. Maybe they just have this generic, snobby thought of "no", not understanding the thought behind it (but making no attempt to). You know, this preconceived assumption that since nobody else has done it before, there must be a reason.
If they HAVE a good reason, they really should step out and say what it is, to shut everyone up. The Dark engine is a decade old, and having it released to the public would do nothing but bolster the name of Thief.

Dario: No one knows the real reason why some publishers don't release an old games' source. All we have in case with T1&T2 is a hope for:
1) Those sources will eventually be found (this year, next year...)
2) If they would be found, Eidos would charitably release them as an open source.
As you can see, there are two BIG "if".
P.S. 728 signs so far. BTW, #727, Travis Boudreaux, have said that Thief maybe is a cult. What a devotion!

slayerking: Thanks. Yes, a hope is all we have.
P.S. 735 signs so far.

How much is needed anyway?
If we break 1000 (although theoreticly we should be able to break 10'000 (26,290 members registered), but most of them weren't really such fans of Thief or were spambots or left thief a while ago.
Oh, and, i was the 718th signer, I think.
Edit: Also there are many fans just viewing fan missions's section and if they view general discussion, well, this thread is not written in CAPSLOCK. That's why I noticed it so late.

Since people are already looking into it, I don't think we have to worry about the numbers. Just hope the people can FIND the dang software.

1. Virtual signatures don't help much. See other similar requests, none solved.
2. Eidos doesn't own Thief. The engine they will use is adapted from their own series of games. No need to grab DarkEngine, update it to latest trends and hold copyright over it..
3. In my eyes, there's only one BIG IF - if the sources are found :-)

1. TTLG's history of petitioning for the editors has been a success, and we already have people looking into this for us.
2. Wait. Who owns Thief, then? We're petitioning the new parent company of Eidos and Eidos-Montréal, Square-Enix, and this request has ZERO to do with the new Thief 4 game. It's for the Thief fan community to take the fan missions and other projects important to us to a whole new level, by finding ways to remove the imposed limitations of software designed for ten-year-old computers, and exponentially expand the already fantastic creativity in this community.
3. Yes. As has been said, their are insiders already looking into it, so finding it is the only issue.
