Does anybody know any case where online petition has had any effect?

DromEd?

Yep. LGS gave the fans a chance and Gathering at the Bar sealed the deal.

Yeah, that's awesome, but we're talking about 10 years later after the company has "passed away" and no one even knows if the source code exists.:nono:

All we can do is hope. What harm does it do asking anyway? If they give it to us then great, if they don't then we're no worse off then we were before.
jtr7 on 26/7/2009 at 02:31
No harm at all. They've responded with positive words, at least, which is far more than before.
sNeaksieGarrett on 26/7/2009 at 07:08
True.... it just seems like a waste of time, that's all. If people wanna sign an internet petition knowing that it's almost certainly a waste of time, then so be it I guess. (I'm sorry if that comes out sounding harsh)

It wasn't a waste of time--they are looking into it. First goal successful! Our part is nearly done. We just don't let anybody drop the ball without an update.

And if it can't be found, we may be disappointed but at least we'll have a definite answer, rather than just relying on pessimism. Another thing worth mentioning is the rather obvious fact that it won't be a single file starting with BeginDarkEngine { and ending with }. They could find some files which give an insight into some workings of the engine, which might be helpful to the people working on OpenDarkEngine, and maybe even Dark Modders could copy things (though I reckon it's a bit late in the day by now).
GayleSaver was able to write the first custom scripts when he 'found' some useful files, and that made life a lot easier for Dromeders.
Also, if they announce that the source code is lost, we can then focus on being granted permission to reverse engineer what we already have.

Good points R Soul. If EM legitimately searched for it and couldn't find it they would probably be a ton more open to fully authorizing reverse engineering it, because if they don't have the data then they can't use it to make a profit and might as well allow us to do what we want about it.
