242: I wish I could be a telepathist...
Brian The Dog: Just look at the id Tech 1&2&3 (a.k.a. Quake 1&2&3 Engines) - these ones has been used in
tens of different games, but, hey, id Software have published their sources in 1999, 2001 and 2005, and no one of licensees have said: what the heck! So why should Eidos be afraid of misterious System Shock 2 "issue?" IMO, Electronic Arts have forgotten SS2 many years ago - just try to find this game in its database in order to get some support, and you will fail.
What's the problem to publish the source of two old games from the previous millennium (Thief 1&2)? Their graphics level is equal to Quake 1&2. Who will be harmed because of this? No one, I guess.
That's not how copyrights work. It's wishful thinking. The wish is understandable, but still based in as much fantasy as reality. Projects have been shut down, after years of work was put into them, and it's really not worth the risk. Let's do it the right way and stop hammering people who are in no position of authority to make the big decision that we are, in fact, now waiting for. :thumb:

Agreed about the need for patience.
We've done the leg work and asked all the different people we could and brought it up with those in contact with the higher-ups and made a petition.
All there is to do now is wait, so let's do that.

Ok. Let's wait for the new guy. BTW, does anybody know his name?

I've contacted Keir several times several weeks ago. He told me the same thing as René did: "You just wait. They (higher-ups) are thinking."
At least things are still in motion.

Yep. EM is really crunching right now. E3 was just the first of the big summer exhibitions for them.

I have a feeling we'll get a release on XBLA or something(other app stores, phones etc) at best - everyone is cashing in on old code now, I cant see them skipping that and the super easy interest into T4 it would create. Have a feeling this is what they're waiting to announce, it wouldn't take more than a week to decide on source... but it does take quiet a while to port old code, get marketing material sorted and ready the press releases ;)
re : id releasing source, they also had quite a bit of trouble with the doom/2 releases on various platforms by other people using their content and just porting the code (and making some good money, considering it's a best seller now). It's not without trouble if you want to release on these new app stores.
But hey, even that would be pretty nice.

Actually I think this does not create a conflict. Take for example ScummVM - it is itself used commercially this way and still is an open source application. Releasing the source code could help them much more - the internal programmer team would likely just do a maintenance work on the code - open source community could do much more.

MoroseTroll: Any change? Are the Higher-Ups still thinking? Sweeping the thing under the carpet? I do not have much time the last few months so sorry if I overlooked something :)

Last I heard was that it had to be run by the legal department...or some such thing. Apparently Eidos was supposed to have had a meeting about it, but that's all I've heard. I'm pretty sure everyone knows what's going on by now anyway. Source code was found in the possession of a former LGS developer, source code was then handed to Eidos for deliberation. This was....how long ago now, and still nothing?

This was at the beginning of February.
