Ah. The links kept giving me a "connection closed by server" or a 404 error. So I just thought it was some joke that had since went away.

As for what could be done now, sure...if someone decided to take an existing editor and revamp it into a dromed editor...that would be possible, but they would have to reverse engineer a lot of stuff I imagine. It wouldn't be easy.
If the author of OPDE gains enough understanding of the dark engine's behaviour and the .mis file format to recreate Thief, would that not in itself enable someone to write a new editor ?
As TaxAkla said, it's nothing to do with Thief sadly.
(

"Darkengine is a system information dll (dynamic link library) that gives mirc the ability to display system information to the channel. Darkengine has been developed by _aprentice_ since 2001. My goal is to make Darkengine the most accurate and user friendly system information script available."

Is there any news about sources? Or there is still no feedback from anyone in Eidos?
MoroseTroll on 13/11/2010 at 10:26
Several months ago Eidos Montréal was quite laconic: "We're working on it." Since then there were no news about the source. At all, AFAIK.

as if they're gonna give away the source code for nothing. who do you think these people are, grandma and grandpa.
threaten them with a boycott of all edios software.

It's happening now because someone here took it upon themselves to do the legwork of tracking down ex-LGS developers, instead of once again asking Eidos to do it. Several of us in the community have approached Eidos over the years to ask them if they would try to track down the source code. I don't know the exact responses others received, but one response I got was 'it's gone' and the second community manager I had contact with simply stopped responding after saying he would look into it.
If I mistrust anyone right now, it's Eidos because they clearly didn't do any real searching for the source code....otherwise it would have been found years ago.
Sorry for late reply.
So I see. You have a good point there. I'm sorry if I offended anyone at all, it's just that I don't want to fall into the trap of "hey guys look! we found the source!oneone!!?$#" and find out that it wasn't true, and I got my hopes up for nothin. I'm just cautiously optimistic, I guess. Here's to hoping we'll see something happen by sometime next year. Oh yeah, and people have been suggesting that (
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/hot_news_someone_broke_into_gog_com_office) Thief or System Shock 2 might be appearing on GOG soon, but I doubt it.

It isn't that simple. Releasing source code for an old engine can benefit your company. Case in point: Urban Terror. It began life as a mod for Quake 3, but due to cheating the developers are now obtaining proprietary rights to the engine from id. I doubt id is providing this for free. Likewise, look at Doom and Wolfenstein for the Iphone. When id ported the games to the Iphone, they were able to just compile one of the open-source engines that had already been modified by the doom community to work, rather than doing all of the work themselves to make the games work on the Iphone. Then there's the whole Nexuiz fiasco (turning an OSS PC game into a console game... bleh!)
These are examples of how releasing source code can make your business money, or at least save your business money/extra work. I personally won't buy T4 though unless the Thief 1 and 2 code are released, but that's my personal stand.

Source code != the entire game. Source code is the engine only. No maps, no sounds, no textures, no models, or anything. Just the program that runs everything. Open sourcing the code doesn't cost them anything, and could very definitely benefit them, by promoting interest in the Thief franchise.
As I understand it, the problem and delay lies with the fact that another company owns portions of the code, so they need to come to some sort of legal agreement with lawyers and everything before it could be released. Threatening to boycott will do absolutely nothing at all, save motivating them to not bother.

There was some System Shock 2 code in there, but as stated earlier...the dev who donated the source code offered to remove it. That should eliminate the legal stuff in terms of dealing with Electronic Arts...as for the normal legal stuff Eidos would have to cover to release, who knows.

i agree but none of that is relevant. carmack had other reasons for GPL'ing quake. you could also argue dark engine modifications + high quality FMs could diminish the appeal for official sequels.
all this is speculation since edios isn't talking back.
i also not playing DE3 or T4 until the codes are out.
