Given your propensity for putting perfectly common "computing" terms in scare quotes, I'm assuming you weren't a very good one.

I highly recommend a clean install of T2 and then run Tafferpatcher and tick the Dromed Mission editor box. My Dromed version seems to have all the right bits and although I don't use it a lot, it also seems to do all the right things.
Yes, I have found this to help too, even though I have not tried to build a mission beyond one simple room. The last install, about a week ago, was fresh from the disk, then I ran the latest Tafferpatcher and carefully selected most of the enhancement goodies, at least those that this older system can deal with.
A month or so ago I had a lot of trouble with an older FM that fried my T2. It was during the 10x10 contest and I was trying to play those and an older game at the same time. Something blew up the NewDark selector, so I tried Dark Loader instead and it worked once, but all subsequent FM loads would not play, no matter which loader I used. All of them would just revert to Casing the Joint. So, hence the re-install.
I must be missing something though according to the other posters. While this is supposed to be stand alone, I find a lot of references in the MS registry for the game and if I clean these up, things seem to work better. Maybe this is just wishful thinking. Regardless, a purge of T2 and re-install seems to always resolves crashes and whatnot. I used to try to preserve T2, but once the newest version of the New Dark came out, I just re-install from time to time if things get (oh my god I may make someone flinch) get "hinky". :joke:
For veterans that are well versed in DromEd or just know their stuff, my advise here is not needed at all, but for FM players that run into random issues from time to time, a fresh install can cure a lot of ills. I will take the advise to install fresh, then copy to another location for an alternate install, just in case that one gets hosed. Thanks :cheeky:

Some of those enhanced goodies (obj model update) replaced some models that caused some odd things to happen.

NewDark selector? Oh, you mean how the difficulty selector text is messed up?

I used NewDark so I can make correctly lit captures. So now I don't know which is better.

Hi YCatX. I was talking about the relatively new New Dark Loader, the FM loader that comes with the latest New Dark and is an alternative to Garrett Loader or Dark Loader. My problem a whlie back is the New Dark Loader (aka Thief 2 Fan Mission Selector) would not recognize newly downloaded FMs after I loaded up one of the 10x10 contest FMs. As an alternative, I tried Dark loader and it worked for a few older FMs, but others would just revert to Casing the Joint. The New Dark loader was permanently hosed by one or more of the 10x10 entries. A re-install fixed that issue and the new selector is fine. Easier than dealing with hours of troubleshooting.

It sounds like you problem with Darkloader might have simply been this (taken from the Fan Mission FAQ):
Clean up of files
Occasionally you will find that you'll start a new mission and run into problems. For instance, you might load one mission and when you start to play you'll see something that indicates you're going to be playing a mission other than the one you selected or you might experience crashes.
Sometimes DarkLoader or GarrettLoader fails to clean up the Thief folder while uninstalling an FM, so you might have to do it manually:
Install the original game missions and delete any remains of the following folders in your main Thief folder:
Pal
Bitmap
Books
Fam
Intrface
Obj
Mesh
Strings
Motions
but don't delete the movies, crfs or the res folder! Next, reinstall the mission you want to play and it should load properly.

No no no... The in game menus are messed up. When you start a new game, the difficulty selection menu is all messed up. Its messed up when I installed the 1.10 toolkit, that allowed me to be able to save with DromEd, but corrupted game somehow.
I really wasn't playing an missions, I'm going to fix Ruins of Originia and add a mission or 3. I don't want to get folks hopes up (mine too) if I can't get a stable DromEd. There are so many options now, I'm confused. I only have brief pockets of time to think about this.

I think you may be misinterpreting things, there really aren't that many options. It should essentially just be:
1. Do a fresh install the game of your choice (T1, TG, T2)
2. Patch it up (use Tfix for T1/TG and Tafferpatcher for T2)
3. Extract the Dromed Basic Toolkit 1.10 into your Thief directory.
That really should be it. Are you still having issues?

@ Tannar......Re: clean up of files
Thought it would be a good idea to clean up my Darkloader as per instructions above but have a no of Qs.
1. in my T1/TG Thief directory i have deleted all from books, Fam, intrface, Obj, Mesh and strings and T1/TG darkloader now works beautifully but i don't seem to have any Pal, bitmap or motions files....either where are they or does their none existance matter
2. in my T2 Thief directory again no Pal, Bitmap or motions files, but more importantly in all the other files there are a lot of sub files in Books, Fam, intrface, Obj, Mesh and strings in my 'clean' original T2 game and am thus not sure if i should delete all these files in the T2 install that i currently play my T2 fms ( there are a lot more files in that install ) or only remove the sub files that do not exist in the original clean install
3. if I only use FMSel to play Thief fms after having cleaned up the above files will this issue of Darkloader getting bunged up go away, or does FMsel run through Darkloader and thus this darkloader getting bunged up still be a problem
4. i know there are 2 other fm loaders namely Modernloader and TFMM, i know nothing about them and so have been nervous of using them, does anyone have an opinion of these 2 fm loaders ie how stable are they, would you recommend them and are there any known significant issues with them
Tannar on 28/4/2014 at 15:32
1. That's fine. You don't want any Pal, Bitmap or Motions files.
2. Again, you don't want any Pal, Bitmap or Motions files. As for the others, do you have a mission installed? If so, you need to uninstall it by installing the Original Missions instead. Once you do that, you should not have any Books, Fam, intrface, Obj, Mesh or Strings folders. If you do, delete them.
3. First, if you continue to use Darkloader, this issue may happen again. Darkloader is very good but not perfect and sometimes it just fails to remove some files when you uninstall a mission. But it is no problem to uninstall those files manually.
Second, FM Sel does not run through Darkloader. They are two completely different mission loaders and have nothing to do with each other.
Also, you should know that when you use Darkloader, it installs the FM in your main Thief2 folder. But when you use FM Sel, it creates a folder called "FMs" inside your main Thief2 folder and installs the FM there. This is not important, normally, but it never hurts to know where your FM files are being installed.
4. I've never used them. Between Darkloader and now FM Sel, I've never had any problems (other than cleaning up files from Darkloader as you are doing now).

Thanks Tannar
Re Q.2 Guess what checked thief directory without uninstalling fm and installing OM 1st. Grrrrr
As for FMsel Vs dark loader I guessed FMsel worked that way, but I prefer to use dark loader....it's a personal preference, even tho it crashes on occasions
Once again big thanks
