I have one more question about this mission. I'm know I'm supposed to find a
journal
but am given very little direction as to where to go or what to do to find it.
I know I need to get to the
cathedral
at some point so have headed over there. My question is this. Do things need to be done in a certain order to advance the story? I mean if I wander around long enough will my objectives become clear?
One minor quibble. I find it very hard to determine where a rope arrow will work. For example,
at the police station it sure looks to me like the top of the structure is metal
, and TBH, was stuck there for quite a while. And there was another area where it looked like wood to me but I wasn't able to use it. Not a biggie as when I'm going to use one I always save beforehand but can break immersion a bit.
Otherwise beautiful mission and very Thief like. Congrats on a brilliant effort.

Yes, that's the texture that confused me too but it's just one of those things. Close up I could see but I never went too close as it was a brightly lit area and they just looked like metal plates with big rivets.
I also did some things the 'wrong way round' and found the book then later it became a completed objective so I don't think it matters which way round you do it.

Inside the cathedral are high beams that look like metal too - just be aware...

Fidcal and Shadak, maybe you are wright about the beams in the cathedral, as that one is a custom texture. But the one above at the police station is an old regular T2 wood texture, I thought that everyone knows it well.

You are not obliged to do things in a certain order, but it would be better if you do. :) Those journals explains the events, and it would be better to read them before going in the cathedral.
The journals are very easy to find, they are not hidden. I'm not sure if you want a hint or if you want to find them by yourself though.

I never had any trouble seeing that as being ropeable -- some of the other areas, yes (though more often in the 'looks like wood but breaks my arrow' way).
Do people not use zoom properly to get a closer look?

I'm not that familiar with Thief FM's. The only one I've played is T2X, and that was quite a few years ago. As I said, I just finished TDS so things are quite a bit different in the original games.
No I don't want spoilers. I believe I have found one of the journals, (I think anyway, that's how I found out I need to go to the cathedral), however I'll look around for the others. This one is tough for me being used to the easy difficulty of TDS. I just like roaming around and looking for stuff. :)
As a matter of fact, I was running away from some guards and jumped in the sewer system to get away and found an underwater grate that I could open. I did so (almost drowned but made it lol), then found this dead guy who came to an untimely end. Picked up a couple of nice goodies too! Only problem is once I left I came across one of the infected (totally unexpected I may add), and he killed me. And I didn't save so need to find that area again.
But these are the little things that make this mission so good to me. It's so rare in games nowadays that exploring can actually be beneficial.

There is no reason to give you a "where to go or what to do". If you read the miscellaneous notes and scrolls that the game characters have written as you find them, you are told, "Who, What, Where".
But you need to "find" the items by careful game play.
Malthus' journal in his apothecary shop tell you what to find, and suggests where you should look.
The books on the desk at the cathedral, where Malthus' body is, tell you what to do and where to go. There are many, more than enough, clues that tell you, or should if you read them, what is going on.
If you think you are having a tough time now, wait until you get to N3.

Well the police station top looked like wood to me just fine, it was only the cathdral beams that tricked me, and I spent a lot of efforts and reloads trying to shoot directly up the belltower. Eventually when I found the right way up there and explored, I really loved being way up in that tower!
Later I found the note about the hammer leader telling the subordinate to stop hiding his money up in the tower, and I didn't remember finding any money up there, so I went back and managed to scale up to the VERY top and found it! That was a cool high point for me in the campaign, a nice little hint about something neat that I'd missed, and being able to go back and successfully find it!
Good job. That one is a bit tricky even when you know it's there.
I found it the first time through, but I came in from the roof instead of through the Cathedral. The beams did look "wood" to me, though. Getting up from the bottom level of the tower was the tricky one.
From the main floor level, there are only one or two places where you can make that work. Getting your "rope" in just the right place is really a challenge.

journals I was thinking I needed to read
both of them before going there. I have already read Malthus journal so I think I'm on the right track. If not I'll find out.
This may prove to be to difficult for me if it get's harder though. I'll admit I sometimes have trouble figuring things out. I never even finished TDP until a couple of years ago because I kept getting lost in "Down in the Bonehoard" lol. As it is I'm playing on the default difficulty. I find it hard enough the way it is!
