Actually it's the only way to reach the sewers, and the blacksmith, and to get a sword for when you will need it. (unless you enjoy ghosting)

You need to search every area thoroughly to proceed. These missions are of high quality but also hard. You need to search every room, every shelf, every body to find what you are looking for.
