i wasn't being completely serious you stuffy twit
but my point about closed captions stands, either you do it, or you're too fucking lazy, no two ways about it
and you have no idea how hearing loss works do you? wait of course you don't, you didn't learn from the last time either
SubJeff on 6/8/2011 at 19:34
Actually I have high tone loss in one ear and I've had a perforated eardrum for 2 years that just got fixed. Hearing still isn't back to normal and I have difficulty in crowds/pubs/if there is background noise so what were you saying again?

i've been profoundly deaf since birth which has been a major barrier to my entire life for nearly 30 years

Anyway we already fucking covered this ground for Dear Esther. It doesn't have to become the debate of the century for every damn narration-heavy mod.
For future reference: captions are important. Hopefully they catch on more.

I can get behind that, it's the whining BEFORE you know that is tiresome.

That's basically everyone's position. It sucks when you have a disability and it's not accounted for, but sympathy starts to run dry when you use it as a leaping pad to blatant untruths and as a method to constantly derail topics, in a "IF I CAN'T ENJOY IT NO ONE SHOULD" sort of outburst.
I can't play The Void because they don't account for colorblindness, but you didn't see me bitching about it in that thread.
And, again, I'd encourage you to contact the mod-maker and let him know this is an issue.

HEY GAIS I HEARD DERS A THREAD ABOUT THIS MOD CALLED LIKE STANLEY PARALELLOGRM OR SOMETHING WAI DONT WE TALK ABOUT DAT IS OUNDS SO KUL ALSO YOUR MOM BALLZ LOL!
So I played the little mod and, HL2 assets and not-the-best map making skills aside, I found it quite brilliant. For those of you who havent realized, playing the mod and trying the different paths only gives you about half of the content. To get to the other half, you have to cheat using noclip and flying to different areas. That's when the real meat of the "game" shines, both narration and meaning-wise.
So I noclipped into the big orange room. I really grinned in enjoyment at the annoyed/witty remark of the narrator and found the subsequent transfer to the HL2 level pretty fucking cool and ingenious. I loved the narrators jab about Stanleys drug addiction and hookers, both funny, witty and showing the narrator/game designer IS human after all, not some omni potent being, with human flaws (like anger, jealousy, prone to being annoyed). Really cool moment. And the final speech was pretty cool too on that ending. Though, I was kinda expecting something like "p.s. so you think you took control? dont forget I still made that room and narrator. And I could have disbled cheats but didnt. You are STILL playing my game." Ah well.
Also, another thing you can do is, instead of flying into the big room and getting to HL2 map, fly into the room into connects to and start going through the doors to watch a slightly more depressing ending about escapism and purpose of life.
Both of these show how game designers really want to tell a story, but it is difficult due to the interactive nature of the medium. Its also a play on emergent games where the game is more of a canvas for players to draw their own story... but only as much as the designer lets them. Hence the last line "I will be here at the end. For now..." Really cool, imho
I agree with first post, some of the basic endings are pretty in your face and even banal. But its not until you start "exploring" as I outlined above that you will find the true gems of this mod :D
Btw here's the endings I found:
1) Do everything as narrator says and be "freed" at the end => typical video game ending
2) Do everything as narrator says until the generator valve and be killed => typical video game ending explained and taken away from you
3) Do everything as narrator says but go downstairs instead of up => Stanley goes crazy, the lady on a street, "meaning of life" type ending
4) Take the right door and then let yourself get killed => the "second narrator" ending
5) Noclip to the big room and get transitioned to HL2, then escape through the hole in the map at the end => the "hope you enjoyed the world you made for yourself" ending
6) Noclip into the smaller room connected to the unifnished room and follow doors, then go to an ending with the messages telling you to do things => questioning escapism and free will ending
The author's commentary mentions there are 6 endings so it looks like I've hit them all. Anybody else encounter other endings / hidden things? One thing I noticed is, if you take the right door and face the elevator, you can press the button and get out, which breaks the game and locks you in that room. I guess you could consider that an extra ending :P
On a semi related note, Ive actually been developing an idea for a small game which pretty much uses similar constructors and ideas as this mods, so there goes my novelty factor :/

At what point have I ever done either of these things?
