Played, screwed it, eaten it, crapped it out. Whatever. You're still Koki being Koki. No likes you, you bring it on yourself, so don't act surprised when people assume you're full of it because you know, and we all know, that you usually are.

I know you said not to answer it but tough luck! I think it's a statement about existentialism and a wonderful one at that.

No you don't.
You get to the empty room/hl2 ending by disobeying every order he gives you, and you get to the instructions ending by going through the red door when told to. Really? when
I disobeyed all the orders and the generator blew up I just died and that was it. How do you get to the big empty room? Its not even anywhere close byQuote:
There are
six endings, and they're all accessible without cheats.
That's kinda said, as cheating is kind of the ultimate way of
telling the narrator "fuck you, you're not controlling me!"Quote Posted by doctorfrog
This looks like one of those mods that's just as well played as watching a video of. Is there a video of it yet, so I can avoid downloading it and playing it myself?
Well, tbh, I'd say it is better if you play it. It's much more than Dear Esther and your interaction and choices do matter, so you will get a different experience by playing than watching.

Found five of the endings... missed the one with the red door, and I have to wonder. Is he trying to make a statement about existentialism (or something) or is he just taking a jab at game design, similar to the whole "would you kindly" scenario?
Why not... both?

You're missing the other 5/6th of the game bro.
Come on Koki, I even agreed with you that The Path blows ass, but like this one :P

It's cute for what it is.
Each ending has its own point; it doesn't even have to hang together as a single overarching point, though you try to have fun thinking about that too.
It's cute that the "ultimate freedom" of the "proper" ending is a cutscene.
I have to run... I can give a few more thoughts later on.

Its not even anywhere close by You only get to the generator room if you go left at the start as told, then go up the stairs as told. If you go to the right at the start, he gives you a chance to go back. Ignore him and go to the elevator, and he tells you to go up. If you do go up, you get the alternate narrator ending. If you go down, you come to a red door and a blue door. He tells you to go through the red door- there are two endings, one for each. If you go to the red door, you get the back-in-your-cubicle ending. If you go through the blue door, you go to the unfinished/HL2 ending.

Oh shit, I didnt realize you could go DOWN the eleveator, I thought it only went up. I didnt see the "down" button.
Still, I like my version better. Even if you cheat to get there the narration makes sense and, I would argue, takes on an even stronger meaning since you disobeyed not only the narrator but the entire game mechanic to get there.
Also I read all my replies in this thread, I think I'm officially an artfag. I became what I always deride and never wanted to be. Funny how these things work.

@Yakoob, I'd say you weren't wrong either because all art is interpretation, and even (especially) when you don't do what you're "supposed" to, if you can still make sense of it you can still interpret it. Even if not generally, it works here since the game all but gave you an engraved invitation to do what you did.
BTW I scripted an artfag game sort of like this, but plays out differently (first of all in still being a "game" you can "play" ... sort of; well you're definitely "playing" it anyway), but also it goes in about exactly the opposite direction with the setup than this mod goes; it's like the flip side of the coin. I should probably get around to making it... I just wasn't sure on what platform, since I don't know HL2 modding, and Darkmod is a fuzzy fit, though it might work in a strange way (or there's Unreal, or some coming platform, Rage maybe?).
But since I've read a lot of surrealist & existentialist lit, I think these things could be more sophisticated, or at least more "well read" (recognizing they're in a genre that's been around for a while now), than the somewhat hamfisted way they seem to be so far, which isn't to knock them, but it needs to get out of the "experimental novelty" category into more of an established genre. Or more to the point, IMO these need to take on analog interactivity head-on if they want to develop the genre; they can't just rest on dialog tree-interactivity and get far. But this mod represents what you can do at that level. Anyway, I don't want to bother over-explaining my thinking, since it's better just to make a mod & release it and let it speak for itself.

Played, it got three endings.
1) I'm not really a fan of the theatrical, radio play-ish narration, but that's my own gripe. I loved DE's voice acting because it was more measured, sort of like the narrator was talking to you despite the fact it was more of a book reading, really. This one, the narrator is supposed to be talking to you, directly, but ironically I sorta felt he was only ever talking at you instead.
2) People are banging on about the whole "existentialism" of it, like that means anything. You know what I got out of this? It's funny. It's tongue in cheek. It's having a bit of fun at your expense, and you're having a bit of fun at its expense. Even with the "normal" ending, I had to snigger a bit at the drawn-out overdramatic-ness of the narration, like it was using a sledgehammer when all it really needed was a... well, the equivalent of a ball peen hammer.
3) It's not an artfag game, not by a long shot. It's interestingly constructed, but like I said, it's more interested in having fun than making any real statements. Meta's been done before, and this isn't all that new. But worth fifteen minutes for deffo, yeah.

Aye I definitely agree about the humor, and why I noted I loved the annoyed jabs he throws at you about ruining HIS story and Stanley beying fat and ugly and addicted to drugs :D. Kind of portal-esque in its type of humour.
Whats interesting that Ive noticed in the commentary, the guy said he spent 2 years making this. Not to be dismissive, but *two years* on this mod, especially given its use of stock HL2 assets, seems rather... excessive? Unless that involves testing/reworking/testing/reworking, or he means he worked like two hours every other weekend on it.

Thanks for the recommendation, its was definitely worth the download and as far as anything I've played recently I enjoyed the provocation.
