I would suggest simply playing without saving at all. I don't think there's a good way to ease into it. If you save, you will always tempted to use it, and humans are really good at rationalising.
I first learned to play like this with Nethack, an incredibly unforgiving game, and I took away three important lessons from it. Firstly, you will learn so much better from your failures when you lose a significant amount of progress that you will become a better player much more quickly. Secondly, when you have something to lose, the game becomes much more intense and fun to play. And lastly, winning becomes so much more satisfying, a real accomplishment.
