Here's another gold star plot device moment - we need Lois on the starship. Um, why? They literally do nothing with her except throw her in a room so that she can use the thing that Supes randomly gave her so that she can create a deus ex machina so that they can win the war later.
Interrogation. She's being mind-meld interrogated at some point during her stay on the ship, providing the villains with the location of the Kent ranch so they can go fetch the ship and threaten his family.
(I'm not saying it makes sense but it's explicitly stated in the movie.)

As to the other question... well, I want to ask, why is it that when the Avengers tore the hell out of NYC nobody complained, but as soon as a bunch of Kryptonians do it everyone is up in arms? I know better than to think it's some sort of cultural bias against DC because Marvel has really really played up their mainstream outreach with movies and shit, but it does bug me that Marvel pulls the exact same sort of shit DC does yet Marvel gets a pass while everyone happily bashes DC. (And I'm not just talking about the movies.)
Because in the Avengers, they show they team taking steps to contain the invasion and minimize the damage, they show them helping and protecting the people on the ground as best they can, they don't wantonly kick the chitauri through skyscrapers, and they don't finish with the Avengers all in anguish over killing Loki in some bizarre unearned payoff.
Also, the final fight in New York is the climax of the characters' stories, where they put aside their differences and start working together as a team, Banner accepts his anger and learns to use it constructively, Tony learns to make the sacrifice play and all that jazz. The destruction of Metropolis is just vacuous disaster porn with no character moments so you have time to wonder about things like why Superman isn't kicking Zod towards the ocean and why the fuck Lois Lane and Superman are making out on the graves of millions.
So yeah, I just came back from watching Man of Steel, and it was a Zack Snyder movie alright. All shiny surface with no understanding of how to make occasionally nifty moments fit together into a story. At least it wasn't a Sucker Punch-esque debacle.

I actually agree with everything you said. People have this notion of Superman that he's some kind of unerring, infallible symbol of America, when the Superman they get that idea from
no longer exists.
In the primary DC continuity, which is a mess of bullshit right now and is going to be rebooted
again in another year or so. And guess what: MOVIES ARE NOT BEHOLDEN TO COMICS CONTINUITY.
The proper, optimistic, idealistic Superman has been in the main continuity as recently as Final Crisis (and really up until Flashpoint, hence Barry being so desperate to find Superman during that story), and in out of continuity stuff like All-Star Superman (generally regarded as the best modern Superman story ever written), as well as the DC Animated features like Superman Vs. The Elite.

Golden Age Supes died in Infinite Crisis, and that was after 20 years of being removed from continuity in Crisis on Infinite Earths. End of story. Not to mention All Star Superman and DCAU Superman are not Golden Age Superman.
Also love your claim that the current continuity will reboot in a year. I didn't know you had a direct hotline to Dan Diddlio. (I do agree that New52 is a mess)

Where did I say Golden Age Superman?

Saw Pacific Rim at IMax 3D today.
We sat a little too close and so I couldn't track all the action sometimes, but there were moments that would definitely not have been so epic if we were further back - mostly the bits where the kaiju stand up and, err, pose.
It was much better than I thought it would be (I really wasn't sold on it at all when the first trailers came out), but not as good as it could have been. It wasn't over the top enough, there weren't enough laughs, I agree with the criticism that Pearlman was badly used but it had an energy (helped by the music; that theme tune was just right) that worked quite well. I'd actually like to see it again from a slightly better seat and that's very rare for me. Its not a brainy film but its quirky enough to not just be another Battleship.
4/5. Well 3/5, but the epicness really was epic enough for an extra point inmho.

... that's who we're
talking aboutNo, dumbass, we're talking about characterizations of Superman, not specific Superman characters. All Star Superman isn't Golden Age Superman, but he has all of the characteristics that make Superman
Superman. Namely the innate, fundamental goodness and decency and caring for his fellow man that makes him an ideal to aspire to. Qualities that the Clark-El of Man of Steel lacked.

When we can have a conversation without you sitting there and playing semantic mindgames and telling me we're discussing something other than what we've been discussing, and calling me a dumbass to boot, then we can continue this discussion. Until then, go fuck yourself with a rake.

At least from here it looks like you're doing the semantic wankery, dethtoll, while frothing at the mouth like an AIM. Get a grip.
