I laughed a bit at the start, but pretty much from the point when the fight over the water happened + the butt rape of the guy by the demon the movie went really stupid and I wasn't laughing from then on.

I enjoyed Pacific Rim, but man it seemed just silly sometimes.
I think I actually liked Wolverine better, convoluted plot and all.
Either way, asian babes kicking ass FTW!

The Wolverine is really good, at least until the final sequence when it becomes more a different, more conventional superhero movie. A really pleasant surprise.
Anyway, I like the silliness in Pacific Rim. It comes from a wholehearted, joyful embrace of the genre, and ultimately, giant robot punching giant monsters in the face is pretty silly (and completely fucking awesome).

I'm baffled by people liking Wolverine. Have you read the io9 review? I think that says it all.
Why do I care? Because I'd people support films with nonsense plots we'll only get more of them.

The main villain's plan might be a bit overly convoluted and the storytelling could be a bit clearer there, but it's not nonsensical. And even if it was, the characterization is on the money, and I'll take solid characters over iron-clad plot logic any day of the week.
Maybe coming to it from Man of Steel makes me overly generous, but I found Wolverine refreshingly character focused, grounded, low stakes, and mostly uninterested in pointless in visual bombast, at least until the ending where it does go off the rails a bit. The bullet train sequence might be a bit naff in terms of effects, but it's way more exciting and engaging than all the tedious empty sound and fury Man of Steel throws at you.
The romance is underwritten, and Mariko is a bit of a weak character (especially compared to the completely kick-ass Yukio) and that's a bit of a problem, but not one that's big enough to overshadow all the things the movie does right.

I have now, and I think it's a stupid review. A typical criticism from that review is something like:
Quote:
All I really wanted from this film was to watch Wolverine kill 100 ninjas. He does not do that. I was seriously bummed. In fact, the ninjas in this movie are seriously feeble.
Note that, in the actual movie, Wolverine
does fight 100 ninjas (or thereabouts), with all his powers intact, and gets his ass kicked. That was a MUCH better choice than what this reviewer suggests. In fact, almost everything IN the movie is better than the alternatives suggested in that review, insofar as those alternatives are concrete and not just "it should be better".

Movies have always had plot holes, and always will; it's inherent to the form. "Why did so-and-so do THAT?" In a novel, you will probably get an explanation. In a movie, there will ALWAYS be significant motivations that are hinted at rather than exposited. And that's a good thing. Contradictory plots are another matter, and lets not even talk about suspension of disbelief amongst our superheroes and giant robots.

Nah, that's jut io9's schtick, and the rest of the review includes a lot of other silliness.
SPOILER CITY
But the important thing is it gets to the nub of the problem - the nonsensical motivation of the main bad guy. Then there is the internal X-Men logic failure of stealing the power of Wolverine, the stupid spider thing that, despite just being on his heart, drains aaaall his power but juuust enough for him to hurt but not die. Yawn.
And the drills! The drills! Oh look how they take the power, almost all the power but oh no you stopped it and it jumped back to the hero. Through the air? Is it on a spring?
Don't even get me started on the Adamantium suit/mech.
Up to the spider heart discovery it was okay. Then it went to crap.

I saw Pacific Rim last week. I realize what it's supposed to be doing, but do intentions matter when the film just isn't that interesting? Maybe I'm just turning into a movie snob, but I thought it was just dumb and a waste of time. I used to say I'd go to any movie that was 100% special effects just for the spectacle of seeing it on the big screen, but these days that's not enough.

PS. How does Wolverine remember WW2?
june gloom on 7/8/2013 at 06:20
Well, his comic book origin -- and I'm pretty sure the movies hew close to it -- is that he was born in the 1800s.
