I don't begrudge anyone these films, but I find much of the discussion about them tiresome as hell. It's the same with geeks geeking out over zombies, ninjas, pirates etc. - it's like certain things completely deactivate any critical faculties. When the fans go all "But it's big robots/zombies/pirates, therefore it's cool by definition!", I think, whatever, but I'd like even my dumb big robot action movies to be well made and to be more than a meme stretched over two hours.
Pacific Rim may be a well-made, smart dumb movie, for all I know - Del Toro is definitely a skilled film maker - but with some of those geek triggers it seems like actual *quality* is entirely beside the point. I like popcorn movies, but I lack the Pavlovian reaction to those staples that seem to make others salivate.

Nonono, if I had said that, I would have meant it.
Exactly my point.

I'd rate Iron Man 3 as my favourite of the three, although I can see why people prefer the first one. The first is all clean lines, while Iron Man 3 is shambolic. Crucially though, all those messy strands come together in the end, and I also found it the funniest while simultaneously having the most sense of danger.
I get more out of watching Tony Stark improvising bombs on the fly than Iron Man smacking a tank around.
I've seen the first one on Blu-ray a few times so I'd feel the need to do the same with IM3, but I totally agree with you regarding taking him out of the armour and showing how the ingenuity and ballsiness of Stark is Iron Man. I think it could possibly eke out 1 as best also, largely because it's not saddled with the origin stuff and can just play more with established continuity.

Jeesus, ITT people try and keep their class cred up by dissing Pacific Rim because it looks too geeky while praising Iron Man 3, which people can't seem to decide if it's the best one or the worst from most accounts.
SubJeff on 6/5/2013 at 12:37
Nah bro, there is geeky and then there is yawn. PR looks like a yawnfest. I'm bored of action stuff that does nothing new and the problem with sci-fi is its hard to do anything really new anymore.
Iron Man is different because Tony Stark is Tony Stark and RDJ is great in this role. Some people complained that you don't see him in his suit enough. We'll he's not Batman, he's actually really cool OUT of his superhero get-up.
I just can't... care about the characters or events in something like Pacific Rim unless the characters are really interesting and fleshed out. Idris is a great actor, I really like him and he can be awesome. But this film is being sold as GIANT ROBOTOS OLOLOL PUNCH GIANT MONSTER A HURRR HURR so why should I believe that its any more than that.
At least something like The Fast and the Furious offers ridiiiiiiculous action and stunts, and its ridiculous because its set in the real world. FF5 was really funny because the stunts were so, so mental, and this looks like its going to top it.

I am legitimately excited about Pacific Rim. I've never disliked a Gullermo del Toro movie, and the buzz from test screenings have been really good.
And Idris Elba cancels the apocalypse.

I have to agree with you that Tony Stark is cool even out of his IM suit, SE. I think that's one of the reasons I loved IM3; you got to see more of that Stark genius at work - a kind of 'back to basics' for him. His interaction with the kid was priceless and I thought the dialogue was outstanding - more so than in the 2nd IM. Just my opinion. The only part I really yawned at was the totally predictable and seemingly obligatory rescue of Tony by Pepper (on the ship).
I didn't mention Pacific Rim as a wanna-see because .... well .... I really don't want to see it. Looked like a (another) Transformers knock-off to me.
Oddly enough, I hadn't seen any trailers of Oblivion til just a few seconds ago; didn't even know what it was about. My reaction was, 'Oh. It's Tom Cruise'. Pretty graphics and great explosions, but I'll probably wait til it comes out on Blue-Ray. I'd much rather spend my money to go see 'After Earth' at the end of this month.

Gotta admit, I'm not too familiar with Idris Elba's work - why is everyone so high on him?
Also, in the "sequels I'll go to no questions asked" category, there's the Hobbit, Sin City, Wolverine, Star Trek, Thor, and Riddick.
And yeah Dia, saw the trailer for After Earth before IM3, it looks pretty good.
