Pain and Gain. What did I just watch?
It was entertaining but... what?

Elysium was predictably average, it had great art direction (not unique though, if you've seen
District 9) and solid action sequences (Blomkamp is clearly a gamer from the days of GIBS!), but everything else was derivative or stupid. There were plot holes as big and as bad as Jodie Foster's English-accented overacting in the role a quasi-military commander leading a coup of the futuristic safe haven. Not sure what the hell Damon was doing in this but it probably saved it from a complete B movie if it were in the hands of someone else.
Suffice to say I don't think Blomkamp should be allowed to write and direct again, plus if it again features his grimy, lived-in sci-fi aesthetic I think I will give any future films of his a miss.
Also, no more Sharlto Copley.
Whoa, HUGE slam on Sharlto Copley out of nowhere. I thought he was one of the best things about the movie.
Elysium felt like a movie that was noted to death. I want to know what it would've looked if it was made with half the budget, and had more freedom to not deliver a feelgood ending.

Hmmm. I find myself agreeing with Scots on this. Sharlto is good but that's it now; where else is there for him to go? I really liked him in this but that's it, isn't it?

Re: Riddick.
I just found out this movie is referred to as 'Riddick - Ueberleben ist seine Rache' in Germany.
This translates as 'Riddick - Survival is his Vengeance'.
YOU WOT?!?

I...don't understand this. Where else is there for him to go? A new, different character. He's an actor ffs.
SubJeff on 9/9/2013 at 14:52
He's never been in anything else and he won't be in anything else.
Morte on 9/9/2013 at 16:05
He was in A-Team -- and one of the few good things about that thing -- he's supposedly really good in Europa Report, he's in the Oldboy remake...he has things going on outside of Neill Blomkamp movies.
SubJeff on 9/9/2013 at 16:40
Okay, I was joking. But really - another sci-fi film? I know he has a different accent in Europa Report, buuuuut Embeth Davidtz doing her saffer accent? Weird. It's like he needs it around to function or something.
And we need the Oldboy remake as badly as we need the Total Recall and RoboCop reboots to erase our memories of the originals.
Oldboy remake. Seriously? I'm disgusted.

Oh sorry, you're totally right - I said it very wrong, what I meant is no more Sharlto Copley in Blomkamp films.

He'd likely be just some dude in South Africa if it wasn't for Blomkamp. As long as they don't flog the horse like Burton/Depp, they could have some great movies. I'm kind of annoyed that they'll likely not make a D9 sequel at all.
For someone who never really had much acting experience he's done all right.

Are you really surprised though? It's a foreign film with large cult following, a western remake was inevitable.
Also, the classic south African accent he had in D9 was put on.
