Guy who doesn't like action films, doesn't like tentpoles. Shocking. :cheeky:

BEST Iron Man movie of the three, possibly my favorite superhero movie ever. I LOVED watching this with my two boys - they cheered and gasped and totally bought into the whole thing, so maybe that was half the fun. At the same time, it seemed like it tried to just tell a solid story without being overly clever or throwing in twists just for the hell of it. The acting and effects was spot-on too, and RDJr has finally evolved in the the movie star that I always knew he could be back in his drug days. Such a fun film to eat popcorn too. I hope he re-negotiates reasonably so they can do more - I could handle many sequels if they're at the same level as the first and third one.

Pffft, I'm such a grumpy prick that I was underwhelmed with even the first Iron Man. Fun characters and sparkling interplay wasted on a dull, thin comic book story with workmanlike action sequences. After seeing it I wasn't awaiting the inevitable avalanche of sequels but harboring a secret hope that Downey, Paltrow and Favreau would run off and make a snappy, screwy, Hawksian romantic comedy. God knows we could do with one of those these days.
Overall, I'm not really excited about
any of the summer blockbusters this year. I guess I'm getting too old for this shit but so far all the trailers have looked pretty much the same to me: portentous opening that build and builds only to explode in the last 30 seconds into a clusterfuck of CGI from about 8 different action sequences which suggests that any intrigue will be squandered and any attempts at gravitas will fall flat because they are not where the focus is. From what I've heard from friends and family, that sums up
Oblivion's problems and
Star Trek,
After Earth,
Elysium,
TooManyComicBookMovies don't look much better. To be fair,
Elysium does look to be the best of the bunch but I was disappointed by
District 9's descent into action tedium and I can't help but feel now that Blomkamp has a hell of a lot more money to play with, it's only going to be worse in
Elysium.
Pacific Rim is getting a pass from me currently because at least it has the decency to look as dumb as it actually is.
As for what I am looking forward too, apart from Alfonso Cuarón's
Gravity, I have no idea. Which isn't to say there is nothing of note coming out this year just that even though I watch a lot of art/foreign/indie/whateveryoucallnonblockbustermainstreamfilms I'm not a huge follower on what is happening. For anyone who does what's the word? What's the word on the new Coen film? Any other name directors releasing stuff this year?
Ahh, it's nice to know I'm not alone....
This season is looking dreadful to me. I'll probably see Oblivion on the big IMAX screen just because I haven't seen anything with my wife in a while, but I'm not expecting much. I was modestly interested in After Earth only because it was based on The Songs of the Distant Earth, but now I hear the plot is nothing like the novel so I'll pass.
I've got zero interest in seeing another empty, storyless shell of a film with CGI action so ridiculous it skips right past funny to eye rolling. I like action movies, but how about some real, gritty action for a change? Give me another Bourne Identity.

Start Trek Into Darkness was very enjoyable. I love the style of these films (and the credits sequence is great).
I'm sure some many Trekkies will moan but imho it was well paced, well acted and not full of cheese. It made me want to watch the first one again.

Where did you hear this? It was not, at all, ever, in any way shape or form based on The Songs of Distant Earth.

Sorry, did you say the ...

Not sure where I heard it first, but it was on Wikipedia as recently as yesterday. The After Earth wiki was just edited today to remove the reference but The Songs of the Distant Earth wiki still says the film was inspired by the novel.
When some of the story details became available, I realized it had nothing to do the Kubrick novel except Earthlings living on a foreign planet after the Earth became uninhabitable. The film story sounds lame to me.

YES. I read the script and loved it so I can't wait. Bullock is an odd choice, but we'll see how she does I guess.
Saw Into Darkness. Terrible title. Fantastic movie.

I know it breaks the rules of lurking - but I too saw Star Trek 2 on Friday ... absolutely amazing! best movie in a long long time.
If you like star trek and have not seen the movie DO NOT open this spoiler.
We watched the episode Space Seed and Wrath of Khan the night before and then new star trek 1 before we went to see it... completely worthwhile.
