Haha ok. I wanted to say nice things about it, but you're right.
I was reaching and it was dumber than it needed to be in most places.
Well I'm glad I watched it anyway.

It's worth watching in a weird way, because it does contain some nice ideas. It's just annoying how far of the mark it went bearing in mind the universe it had to draw from and who was directing it.

I liked Star Trek a lot. It felt more true to the series than the last one, which I found visually very interesting, but I thought the plot was a disaster. This one has lots of fan service but upholds the new style and does it all with a semi-coherent storyline. I might even see it again!

We went to the theatre & watched it (Star Trek 2) yesterday. What I liked about it most were the characters taking on their familiar personalities more fully, and the familiar interactions and banter between them. It brought that endearing part of it back. The visuals & action were of course put on display at the theatre.
As for the fan service, I got annoyed at those parts a little in the same way I was at Prometheus a few days ago... When it edges beyond fan service and homage into straight up ham fisted retread. If they were just being silly with some original absurdity I could appreciate that a little more.
It's one of those movies where the action starts going over the top, so I'll think ok get on with the plot, but then it gets along with the plot and I'll start rolling my eyes and think, ok, ok, fine, get back to some action then...

Star Trek Into Darkness skates by being the dumbest movie I've ever seen that wasn't directed by Michael Bay on the backs of a mostly capable and charming cast.
Iron Man 3 is winning the summer thus far by a country mile.

Cumberbatch was aces though, even when chewing scenery like there was no tomorrow.
Plot was at times hilarious, at others....hilariously bad:
"we can save Kirk with these magical uber stemcells! Bring me a frozen dude full of magical stemcells....then dump him out on the floor, ignore him completely, and use his cryotube to keep Kirk frozen while we try to harvest magical stemcells from this other, very much active, angry and dangerous man!"
or
"I am the admiral of starfleet and yet I still don't see the problems with wiping out a starfleet ship full of starfleet officers, or indeed loudly proclaiming I am going to do so regardless of the captain's protestations, while within fucking coms and hell: visual range, of earth"
and of course all the assorted silly artificial gravity/insane ship design aspects, or the obsession they seem to have with putting fucking SPACESHIPS in planetary atmosphere whenever possible..
Still a very watchable movie, but yeah, Iron Man 3 just had more fun, possibly since by the third film you don't have to hove quite so close to the source material.

I'm hearing good things about the Coen Bros new offing, Inside Llewelyn Davies. An article or something I read about it a few months ago had me thinking it was going to be a downer (it's about a washed up folk singer playing in the Village dives I remember so well when I lived there).
But reading the Cannes reviews this week, they portrayed it as the one bit of "levity" in a crowd of downers this year, which I take to mean it's funny, and it's apparently the movie they're all talking about from this season. And it's the Coen Bros. They've got one of the best track records for movies anyone could hope to get.

And in the "looks interesting enough to link to, but not interesting enough to embed"-section:
(

(

(

Fast and Furious... haven't seen one yet, don't intend to.
You really
really should. With Fast 5 and Furious 6 it's cemented itself as the greatest old school action franchise currently going. Amazing (practical!) vehicular mayhem and phenomenal balls out fisticuffs, and every action scene manages to set itself apart from the others. Absolutely
must be seen with a crowd for the full effect (especially the mid-credits tag in 6, which resulted in audible gasps and 'holy shit!'s in my showing).
