Teachers play violent online computer games these days?
Surely our kids are doomed!
Almost she didn't like it "it's not like the other ones" she said
However I do know teachers who do play it :)

I certainly missed the sword. It was far more useful as a defensive tool than a dagger. With the sword, I could deflect blows...allowing me time to get away...without hurting anyone. The dagger, well...it's meant to inflict damage...doesn't really give you a choice...other than to not use it at all, and if that's the case...why have it at all?

Exactly! The sword represents choice, the dagger froces us to kill...

The sword was cool in Thiefs 1 and 2. But the dagger is also good as it increases the use to be stealthy. If Thief 4 was made I would prefer a dagger to the sword. I mean, how can a thief be stealthy lugging a big sword around? It will just get in the way.

I've always been a huge fan of swordplay both in the real world and in gameing. Its a fine art that is hard to recreate in a virtual world, especially with a mouse and keyboard. But having a sword doesn't really make sense for a Thief to be carrying around, hence the dagger was an acceptable change. I liked both styles in the end though and found both enjoyable.
On a side note, I'm hoping that the Nintendo Wii will be the first true system to master swordplay in games. But it is just a hope...

The dagger also "froses" us to avoid front on confrontations with guards, and take the stealthy option.

No wonder you are single
Your compulsive need to yell at every opportunity "I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND, THAT MEANS I HAVE SEX, WHILE PLAYING VIDEOGAMES! THAT'S RIGHT, SEX!!!" makes me really wonder about how much your really getting. You know what they say about those who talk the most...

Ha ha ha I tried to get my fiancee into games but she got as far as warcraft then got bored! She is a teacher so perhaps that has something to do with it...
I'm shocked she hasn't gutted you for your abuse of the language. I take it you don't send her many emails.

Garrett used a short sword, not a full sized one...sure..it would still be kind of clunky, but I can suspend my disbelief.

Actually, in T1 + T2, it's a full sized sword, not a shortsword.

How you can say? At what length a sword becomes a longsword?
Yeah, we have only one kind of sword model in original Thief, but if you look at the model, it really looks rather short.
It would be more practical for a thief to have a short sword, afterall he uses it mainly as a side tool when things go bad, he doesn't engage face-to-face fights like a barbarian. An a long sword would be impractical during stealthy infiltration, climbing walls and rocks, taking a route through tight spaces and all that physical exercise. Such thief must depend on agility and not be burdened with heavy tools.
Which leads me to the not realistic aspect that always bugged me : Where Garrett puts all the loot he steals, does he have some invisible anti-gravity backpack?
Nevermind how great Thief games are, I always dreamt of a truly realistic simulator of a medieval thief, probably with some RPG elements.
You would have a grappling hook instead of funny rope arrows, the loot you steal woould add to your weight and limit your agility, you would have different skills for pickpocketing, lockpicking, stealth and infiltration... No fancy steampunk tools like mechanical eye, flashbombs and scouting orbs, instead you could se normal things of everyday use you find around in a "McGyver" way (kinda like what the Cold War game has showed us). Just your skill and wits.
It'll prolly never happen. :(
