Hello people of the TTLG forums, I'm here to tell a story to you. I'm a bit ashamed to start posting such quality around here, since I know there are much better writers amongst us aswell. However, I'd still like to hear your opinion about these chapters I've wrote of an thief's diary. The name of the story is: Tale of The Thief. I've worked on this project for around half a year, but haven't managed to scrape up that much of material. However I will still post parts of it here, so you might want to read it. The universe this text is based on is a bit of mixture between Thief, and some other games. You might recognize which games I'm talking about. Anyways, enjoy.
Chapter : Finders Keepers
" Why do you approach me apprentice? Don't you know respect anymore?" - The hooded character replied. I hesitated for a second before taking another step towards him, but continued walking. "I command you to stop. Don't come any closer!" The man was trembling in fear. I didn't care. I would have my revenge now. I drew my dagger from it's hilt, lifted my foot for the last time and stepped next to the old silly man. I pushed the dagger against his chest while listening to his last whimper: " I know what you think! Ugh... I didn't do it! I DIN'T DO IT! STOP NOW! " Even though I enjoyed the situation where this old creep was defensless, I kept pushing the dagger deeper and deeper, slowly feasting on squeking noise his old and withered lungs made when they collapsed. His last words still came upon his lips when his last breath flought away: " You will pay! "
Suddenly I was awake. I raised from my bed covered in cold sweat. "Why now?! Why?! I thought I got over it already.. " I thought with myself. The old man I saw in the nightmare was my mentor, the same man that had picked my talent off the street corner when I was just a kid, stealing from the shopkeepers. Or at least that's what he told to me, I really wouldn't know. But in the end he betrayed me. And he paid for that crime with his life.
It was still night. Everything was silent. I stepped on the cold stone floor and walked to the room next to my bed. I lit up the candle in the small room with my matches, the light revealed my precious equipment on the wall. Suddenly I heard something. I quickly put out the flame of the candle with my finger tips, and just when I pressed against the wall I saw a figure in the doorway of my bedroom. It was staring at the empty bed of mine, which seemed as it hadn't even been used during the night. That's how I sleep, always prepared for the worst. The dark figure stood there for a while, but after a few seconds it turned away and went back to the room behind his location. I held my breath for a little longer, and finally heard the out door closing.
I leaped from behind the wall and quickly snuk to the doorway where the figure had just appeared in. Slowly I gazed into the room, and saw nothing but my kitchen table. Without spending another thought on what had just happened, I returned to the equipment room and started preparing for tonight. Someone has been trying to spy on me for the last couple of weeks, and I might have a clue why. It's because of that old, silly man.
The night kept the city streets silent. Not even the sound of roof tiles clashing together that was made by the pressure of my foots steps didn't wake anyone up. I jumped onto the last roof before reaching the target building, and sat down on the roof to balance my breathe. The moon was shining bright, revealing almost everything on the streets. I was near the mayor's house now, that would be the target of my hit tonight. I drew out my plans and viewed them for a while, just to make sure the route was clear. There was a balcony under the roof, guarded by no one. All the guards were either in the hallways in the building itself, or outside under the city lights, which was a good location to spot them.
I was now on the western side of the building, on a roof about few meters above the one I was about to reach. The distance was too long just to be jumped over, so I took my bow off my chest and tied my rope around one of the arrows. The magically enchanced edge of the arrow could stick into anything, so I shot the arrow into one of the rooftiles on the mayor's. A correct hit, barely made any sound either. I leaned against the rope, and tied it down with another arrow, so I could climb on the rope. I went all the way to the Mayor's roof and then pulled the rope twice, releasing the other end. After packing up my equipment again, I carefully snuk towards the balcony ahead of me. The fall wasn't too long, so I managed to keep it quiet.
No one ever bothered to lock the balcony doors so I stepped right in. This room was next to the one I was supposed to get in to. The room was filled with bookshelves and antique artifacts from the middle-east. That kind of stuff didn't really interest me, not to mention any pawn brokers either. So I crept to the door facing the balcony door I just used. The door was locked however, so I leaned over on the door and listened. I could hear the guard passing by, whistling some unknown tavern song, and then turning away from the next corner on the right. I switftly unlocked the door from the inside, and jumped into the hallway. There were a couple of torches lighting up the hallway, and the other one of them was next to the door I was supposed to use for entering. I snuk to the door, and drew out my lockpicks, then starting to pick the lock. Suddenly I heard steps coming at me from the other corner behind me. I took my torch blinder from my lap and put it over the torch. Improvised cover. I held my breathe and started acting as if I was part of the wall itself.
The guard that had just passed a while ago no longer whistled. This happy whistling had turned into confusion and alertness. The guard drew his sword and slowly began walking towards the unlit torch, meanwhile looking for scoundrels to bash. After looking around for a while the guard finally groaned: " Ah well... I guess it was just the wi... " *THUD* The guard didn't get to finish his sentence when he already felt pain in his upper neck. I returned to the lockpicking, leaving the snorting body laying under my feet. The lock didn't prove out to be much of a challenge, so I opened the door and dragged the body behind me into the room. After closing the door and having myself alone in the room with the unsually heavy guy, I turned around. " Holy sh... " I gasped, and put my right hand on my mouth to block further noises. The whole room was covered with bookshelves, filled with parchments, books, artifacts. Not that this would be extraordinary in normal situations, but this was something I had never seen before. It was a keeper library." No wonder why they never let anyone inside here.. " I chuckled. This was the place where I was supposed to find the keeper artifact I had heard so much about, the Golden Skull.
I walked around in the room, viewing the books in the shelves from a distance, and when I finally reached the other end of the room. After turning right from the last corner, I saw something unexpected. A figure of a man, standing in front of me. Staring at me, his face hidden from curious eyes by a hooded robe. I knew I had seen this figure before. " So you came ****. " "Just as I expected" The figure spoke, with a warm, but somehow spine chilling voice. "Who are you? What are you doing here?" I replied with an anxious tone. " It's the prophecies ****, you can't denie them. No more, not when you have just fulfilled one! " The figure spoke again. " The Prophecies, eh? So you must be one of those keepers. You always take an interest out of nonsense. " I provoked. " Now now young accolyte, I'm sure you believe at least in one of them. The one having something to do with your destiny in this world. " The spine chilling voice explained with grinning lips. That didn't help making a clear picture of the situation at all. " Are you here because of my former mentor? What did he tell you? " I replied. " Everything. " The answed was cold. " I see... So why are you here then? What do you want from me? Do you seek death just like my mentor did? " I replied glazing down and moving my shoulder around, relaxing myself if I had to move around quickly. " I wouldn't seek death Accolyte. But I think you do, if you keep stealing from us. We don't tolerate thieves amongst us. But we all do respect your talent ****, that's why I'm here tonight. To seek out for you, to recover the soul in you that has strain from it's righteous path. " The dark hooded character chuckled. " I don't know too much about the keepers, or that nonsense you keep talking about. But one thing I know for sure, I don't have time for this! Now tell me what you want so I can keep doing what I was doing before you came in my ... " The Keeper froze my words with a wave of his hand, and then finished: " I'm here to take you with me. We want you to become a keeper, and leave this petty thief nonsense for the others to handle. You possess a great power youngling, and that's why you should be taught how to use it right, not for lowlife actions such as these. " The keeper explained.
" I see.. Will I get paid? "
