So GoG (
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_temple_of_elemental_evil) is having a sale on the Temple of Elemental Evil which frankly doesn't mean much (OH MY GOD $1.80 OFF I CAN BUY AN EXTRA COFFEE ;_; MY LIFE IS COMPLETE), but it prompted me to think about getting it. I loved, Arcanum, despite its flaws, and Bloodlines is still my FavoriteGameEvar™. How's this one compare? For comparison, I didn't care about Baldurs Gate or Planescape Torment too much (albeit I considered getting BG2 hearing its way better).
Does it deliver the standard Troika awesome, or is it a more of a typical DnD "epic fantasy hero" fest?
EDIT: and not to make extra threads, I've also been looking at PAtrician 3 on GoG - thoughts? Oh and I've been craving one of the oldschool Annos ( 1601 / 1503, maybe 1702) but, but I cant seem to be able to find a place to get it aside 40 bucks on amazon (no thanks), and its not on GoG/Steam/Ubistore, what gives? Googling showed some d/l links that led me to think it might have been released for free but it doesnt seem like it.

Yes

I didn't actually care for it, for largely the same reason I disliked Baldur's Gate. Low level DnD combat sucks.

Temple of Elemental Evil is regarded as the best d&d turn based game ever made that follows actual d&d rules that is. I would advise you to goto co8.org and read more. Also check out the Circle of Eight mod version 7.4. It makes the game even better with 2 games to play. The original vanilla version with alot of bug fixes and the New Content version which has the bug fixes and the new content that makes it more like the module. Two examples of brand new content are the city of Verbobonc (spelling) and the quests there as well as War of the Golden Skull which is the adventure that happens after the Temple is completed. Check it out!:thumb::)

Yes, it's fantastic, although a little hard to get into at the beginning. It's got the best combat system ever made for an isometric RPG. Many of the battles are very challenging and with the large variety of monsters and other enemies, the game has enormous replay value.
Definitely get yourself the (
http://www.moddb.com/mods/circle-of-eight-modpack/downloads/circle-of-eight-modpack-740) Co8 NC 7.4 pack that Stingm mentioned. Besides the essential bug fixes, a lot of the new content adds alternative quests that you can take instead of (or in addition to) the boring FedEX style quests in Homlet that have turned many people off the game.

Phatose is on the money, I think. From what I recall of the combat in ToEE, it was just a string of miss, miss, miss, miss, Mage fires off only spell memorised and is now useless, miss, miss, miss...
It stuck hard and fast to the D&D rules, but that's not necessarily a good thing. The D&D rules allow people with pencil, paper and dice to simulate combat, which you can do far more realistically on a computer without all the restrictions. Baldur's Gate did a far better job of translating the turn based rules, I thought. But again, that only really got fun when you got passed level 5 and weren't dying all the time.
That and the game was pretty much all combat and dungeon exploring (most of which was identical) and very little actual role playing.

Hmm, I'm getting mixed messages here. if it's a hack & slash I'll pass (reason I never bothered with Icewind Dales or Diablos), but if its more like creative mechanics, story and world I'd be down (reason I love Arcanum and Bloodlines).

I think it's fairly clear that ToEE is a pretty faithful D&D dungeon crawl. I haven't played it, but the general consensus seems to be that it does D&D mechanics well and is more or less all about the combat a la Icewind Dale rather than seriously fleshed out world-building or narrative; a real, Honest-to-God Dungeon Crawl, in other words, if I've got it right.

It's completely faithful to the AD&D ruleset (3.5? can't remember) and tries to replicate the ToEE module as closely as possible. Which is also why it was boring as hell.
