Just today I was wondering, is Garrett really that much of a bad egg?
It's obvious he makes his money off stealing, and possibly selling these off to the highest bidder, but what about his better, idealistic side that prompted him to help Viktoria?
In short, what can you speculate about Garrett and his background, what is your personal idea of Garrett? since I find that though we have the information from the games, it's given enough to still preserve a bit of mystery behind this man. What justifies this thieving habit?
Oh, and sorry if this question has been asked before. Let me know if it has.

There was
nothing idealistic about that.

I think that he feels like the money will satisfy him; or that getting the loot will give him that high, that rush, to just make it to the next job.
It always seems like he'd never steal anything from someone who couldn't stand the loss (his fat, rich victims deserve it most of the time)
Garret puts all emotion aside, he is calculating and cold mostly. I think it's an obsession that he can't control; a release for the anger, frustration, and disolussionment that came from a parentless, friendless childhood, a cruel and demanding education, and the uncaring, frozen streets of The City.
I think the money is just a symbol to him. I don't think he ever really needs it; he probably just spends it all on gambling or women, living the only way he can: on the edge.

The answer, in my mind, has always been fairly simple. We talk again about this classic approach to elite game design and gameplay. Simply put, Garrett is a Master Thief. A true master would never kill, do harm, etc...
The pinnacle of the original Thief experience was as a Master Thief who "ghosted" the first title. Sorry, kids. Anything less is mere barbarism. If you harm anyone in the Thief or Ultima worlds, you may just as well go get an rpg and hack at it. I recommend Might and Magic VI... :sly: Might learn a thing or two about the "thief character".
Nevertheless, Garrett (whilst functioning at peak) is an elitist. He robs because he can, he robs because he needs money. Violence against man is not an option. He accepts this challenge and not only adheres but pulls it off with the utmost grace and style. A ghost leaves no trace and is rarely seen.
Unfortunately, they decided to put in difficulty levels. So now Garrett is Master Thief, he is a murderer, he is basically whatever the player wants him to be. But the only way to truly understand Thief and be born unto the shadows is to solve The Dark Project on Expert. :ebil:

pfft ghosters
quicksave

I greatly prefer the ironman style. No saves or loads permitted. If that means I get spotted and have to resort to force, so be it. I'm not gonna load a savegame.

Of possible taffer interest, a listing of FMs and OMs that cannot be 100% ghosted by any variation on the rules, called "Ghost-Busters", should be compiled.:cheeky:
And I've stated my opinion on Garrett's conscience elsewhere just recently, but also before, in other threads like this. Just to stay on topic without actually adding anything.;)

Actually, The Dark Project lent itself quite well to the idea of ghosting. It was all there, built in. Solve the entire game without killing anyone. You can get more and more detailed from there, as the Thief community did! The early days of ghosting was, again, much like a rabid frenzy. One up after one up. Few games have evoked such a resolved fanbase.

TDP is not 100% ghostable.
You are always spotted by Cutty and that crazy opera singer. :cheeky:
