Hey all
Got back from the movies a few hours ago after seeing "The Thing" which whilst it shares the exact same name as the 80s movie of the same name (which in itself was a remake of an earlier black and white movie which was ALOT tamer) is a prequel.
For those that have been to the movies / downloaded it, I was wondering what your impressions were of it. I personally very much enjoyed it, especially the ending which links in picture frame perfect to the beginning of the 80s movie which was awesome to see in there. Though I found the aliens and gore + scares to have been alot better in the 80s movie. 3D simulated gore and aliens still for me have that more fake look.
That said they were quite good. Just not AS good. Though I was sitting through the movie throughout often thinking where's the dog that you see at the start of the other movie? before I had that one answered for me. Might need to sit down and watch this again on dvd when its out, so that I can watch it in a less analytical view (as I often do when watching sequels/prequels/remakes).
So all in all I thought it was a fitting prequel.

So it is from the point of view of the Norwegians? Have you played the mostly awesome game from last gen?

The Thing game is really mediocre. There's another game from that era called Extermination that's basically the same thing only better.

Besides the Resident Evil style voice acting Extermination is excellent. Gets better as you play through it and get better equipment.

The game I've played only briefly, need to have a proper play of it at some point. And yes the movie is from the point of view of the Norwegians.

The game had some cool ideas, but the trust system was flawed at best and far too much of the actual gameplay involved repairing generators.

And from the reviews and comments I've read from people about the game, apparently even people you've tested negated to the Alien thing, moments later attack and turn out to be aliens, which negates the point of even testing people.

Postmodern/existential commentary.

I saw this with my nephew because really what the hell else are you going to see? I wasn't expecting to like it. I'm sick of CGI substituting for story. But it wasn't bad. It was a worthy prequel. Something a horror has to do is to capture total seriousness. It did that. It also managed to convey the uncertainty of who might be the creature quite well. Most importantly the CGI did not substitute. It managed to enhance. I liked double face. I liked the non organic litmus test too. I also liked that the last torched was somewhat uncertain. But what about Kate? The dog was loosed but she never made it back to base as far as we know. Ah. The third thing.

I thought it was great. Pretty frightening in some spots. The creation of Split-Face stands out as one of the most horrifying sequences I think I've ever seen. I can't wait to see it on Blu-Ray.
