How well they made the sets for the show to look EXACTLY like those in the 80s movie was one of the things that impressed me most. That and the ending, which had me wanting to go watch the 80s (now) follow up. From the small response this movie has been getting this movie seems to have gone by unnoticed by many. Surprising.

I am SO glad to hear this is a decent film. I guess we all are.
I wonder if I should get Starr to watch the first one first or if I should drag her to the prequel and then rent the Carpenter classic.
Although, I have to say that there is a huge soft spot in my heart for the original film (the OLD one)... But after reading the story, Carpenter's version is so much better at capturing the atmosphere of these huge guys in a tiny station slowly going paranoid.
But yeah. Got to see this one before I start clicking on spoilers like a dink.

Definitely go see it while you can. It's having a bad theatrical run, which is interesting considering the JC "sequel" didn't do too great either. I've never seen the The Thing From Another World but from what I've heard from everyone at outpost31.com, it doesn't really follow Who Goes There like JC's version does. The Thing 82 always gave me the chills. The paranoia and gruesome sequences really stood out to me when I was a kid. I introduced my media theory class to it earlier this year and it was great hearing shrieks out of people that have never heard of movies using "practical effects" over CG.
On my last tangent, being a 3D modeler, I found the quality of CG in the film to be pretty high up there.

Aircraftkiller? What happened to your old account? I'm sorry if this is old news!

That's the thing. I want to watch it on DVD/Bluray, Cable, Sat, streaming, whatever comes first.

GBM banned me for being a dick on the BioShock forums in 2007. I got what I deserved. Just wish I could have my old account back. ;-)
Either way, I'm really looking forward to the BD/DVD release. I want to watch the 82 film right after the 2011 film and get the "whole picture" that isn't blurred by memories!

Wink wink come on GBM that was FOUR FUCKING YEARS AGO.
Anywho, I'm surprised that in 11 years I've never been banned. I know I deserved it more than once.
Ok, my contribution OT: I am a horror movie buff but I think I've seen it all... seriously. I just can't find anything that is genuinely scary. I dont know, I guess watching people getting their heads cut off constantly on TheYNC has somewhat desensitized me, coupled with a decade and a half of gaming... So whatever, I saw "The Thing" on a list of 100 scariest movies and I checked it out on Netflix but I fell asleep... I dont remember how far I got into it. Should I give it another go? I was actually pretty tired that night. Can you guys recommend some good ones and ill see if I've seen them or not. Foreign films too, I dont discriminate. :)

Have you seen [REC] yet? Last 20 minutes are some of the most terrifying I've seen in nearly 30 years of watching movies. I was more scared than I was of Indiana Jones and the fucking Temple of Doom when i was 4, and that movie made me cry.

Yep, seen Rec and Quarantine. Any other suggestions?
Also, Rec is far scarier if you understand Spanish. :D

You fell asleep through JC's The Thing? That's blasphemy. Go get some sleep before you watch it next time! It's seriously a great film. The amount of paranoia and tension in it is palpable. The creature effects are incredible. I don't think there's been anything quite like them in the physical effects department. I'd recommend trying it again, if only to fully experience the vision of an alien creature that's quite unlike anything we've really seen before.
