Not at all, I reckon some evil entity inhabits them. That is certainly the case with haunts. They're not really Hammerites, just the bodies, haunts inhabit their bodies. Perhaps it's the same with zombies.

Hmm... Quite right, but you missed one point! You can actually see the evil thing which inhabits their bodies. This zombie, for example, is controlled by the earthworm lurking in his eye:

I liked the zombies in Thief 1/2. The sound for them is just skin-crawlingly fantastic.
However, no Thief level with zombies has ever come remotely close to being as creepy as the Cradle (in my opinion). RTC is up there, but I feel the Cradle eclipsed it.

Oh, concerning the realism: The Thief zombies are controlled by cockroaches which reside inside the remaining parts of the brains! However, plaits and fungi can also take control as well. That's the reason why nearly every inhabitant of our graveyard has a fungus under his shoulders.
@Jomero: The cradle was one of the most atmospheric parts of the game! Alas, the 'zombies' lacked of funny noises and groans. And of fungi.
