Yes, and actually that scares me a bit. It would be very easy to brainwash or control people that way.
Ok, actually more than a bit.

Interesting conversation. Once the peak is hit, we should have photorealstic video game experiences (and that's not too far off).
People used to say that when Wing Commander 1 came out.

This can be already done without direct brain interaction and even over a distance.

Yes, for example with a
patriotic WWII shooter. With pathetic music, like MOHPAA. Mostly disgusting, but those game can easily brainwash people who are not pacifists.

Yes, but Wing Commander was digitized actors, not CG. CG is getting closer and closer.

You mean via subliminals I assume? Still, the idea of someone having direct access to your brain is a bit unnerving don't you think?

I'm hoping that when real-time photorealistic rendering becomes commonplace, it will prompt game developers to explore other styles. Just as the Italian Renaissance wasn't the end of development in the field of painting, I don't think photorealistic games will be the endpoint some people tend to think of them as.

What do you mean "when"? This is already happening. Surely all the cell-shaded games haven't escaped your notice.

No it wasn't. Wing Commander
1 was CG-rendered sprite spaceships combined with hand-drawn everything else. Schatten's point was that "ah yes, but such and such is getting closer and closer to reality" has been said about almost every graphical technique throughout gaming development history, and it still doesn't mean we're 5 minutes away from photorealistic believability.
But I for one am looking forward to when the bubble bursts, developers and gamers stop treating photoreal as the
ne plus ultra, and actually consider stylistic and expressive rendering as a standard approach rather than a charming novelty. Cel-shading is a great start, but there's precious few other styles being experimented with.

No. I meant via the next gen electroshockers that can work over some distance, and some other device that can unbalance your ear so that you can be directed in the direction where the controler wants you to go.

It will be the nedpoint of the technical improvement. You can't get much better than photorealistic in realtime. IMO everything else is capped by creativity and not by technical restrictions like hardware speed or limited resources.
