@Mods: If there is a topic like this, please close this one
I was really interested in how Eidos came up with al the names for Characters+Locations in Thief, and also the view on the real life (The Hammers really look like the Roman Catholics during the 16th century...the Pagans are...well, the name says it.
But for example, Father Karras was a main character in the Exorcist, also a Priest.
But I'm more interested in the names of Constantine, Viktoria, and others...

Sorry, what? My apologies, but I'd like to see some pictures of that. :erm:

I think he meant they are similiar in the way they act...

I mean, more with the strict codes they are bound to, and of course, the Old English talk. "Haveth thou seen Brother (name)"
Also the Hierarchy is much the same, Priests, High Priests. For their headquarters were called the Hammer Cathedral, and the ways of torture ;)
Don't understand me wrong, I don't have anything against Christianity, but I do not agree with their methods of "converting" people in the Medieval times.

That's why you're the woodsie lord, right? :sly: I guess the catholics weren't as bad as those hammerites are although they were some inspiration without a doubt. But you didn't want to talk about that, did you? :erg:

Now, go back to the mid-80's and play through every Ultima until part VII. That is where much of "Thief" comes from, which is no surprise as Richard Garriot and Warren Spector had a lot of influence over the team. It may be cheesy to point out that in the making of Thief II video, you can quite clearly see the Ultima game box stashed off to the side. And yeah, LGS also made a few Ultima games.

I wonder if there's a Hammerite Inquisition? A scary thought...
I think LGS probably just thought of names that sounded cool for the most part. I can't imagine they spent loads of time with history books and family trees to give each name meaning. In another thread it's mentioned that Cavador comes from Latin and means "One who digs", but that's probably more of an intellectual injoke.
If you go with the Hammers=Christians analogy, Constantine's name really doesn't make sense, as the Roman emperor Constantine was largely responsible for legalising and spreading Christianity.
The name Viktoria seems to suggest that the names were not given any thought with regards to meaning, as it seems to be a completely stylistic choice to change the C to a K.

So, there you have it, The Woodsie Lord 'ol boy. The names were chosen at random, excluding injoking of course.

I think you mean Looking Glass Studios.

@Beleg: No, I'm not really interested in Modern-day Religious tolerance...I'm a Pagan myself :)
Besides, a Hammerite Inquisition...I thought it was happening all the time. Weren't the Hammers patrolling the streets to search pickpockets, thieves, murdereres, to throw them in in their nice prisons.
Hmm, maybe Exorcisms: "The power of the Builder compels thee!" (nailing a Pagan to the floor while shoving holy water in his throat
But the name Karras isn't really known, maybe just a link to other stories. Constantine, hmmm, maybe you can see it as a "cloak". He was a noble, no-one suspected him to be the Trickster himself, possibly they used it to conceal who he really was. A bit far, and not likely, but it could be possible.

"Constantine" happens to be another reference to early Christianity.;)
