What do you guys think of a similar entertainment device for garret to hang onto and pass away those slow shawdowy moments?
Personally, it wouldn't work for me. I know I'd get all wrapped up in Garrett's gamepig & forget I was playing Thief (okay, so I'm mildly OCD, so what?!). I'd probably shoot myself in the foot or kill an innocent bystander when trying to get back to Thief, so no, it wouldn't be a good idea for me to get that distracted.
I usually run around and see how far I can explore the immediate area while waiting for the intended target to return on another lap of rounds (after I've saved first, of course, because I usually get caught/killed when I do that). I love the challenge of seeing how far I can go before the guard, etc., returns (and kills me because I just got caught out in the open with no shadows around). Or, if I go exploring and make it back to my hiding place before the guard sees me, I'll save right there so that there's less time to wait if I have to reload.

A basic DromEd lesson on how patrols work:
Tiny invisible markers (TrolPoints) are placed where you want the AI to go. Eash marker has a number and they are linked "to" and "from" each other in succession. The AI is given the property "does patrol" and is placed very close to one of the TrolPoints and will thus follow that particular group of linked points unless stimulated to do otherwise. AI can be given another property: "does patrol random sequence." The AI will still follow the linked path but in a random fashion.
You would think that you would want just about every AI to patrol in random fashion. Think again, as it would frustrate the player to no end especially if they play as a ghost. Designing a good level is about offering a good challenge. But it's also about empowering the player to succeed but not letting the player realize that that is what is happening! yes, we are manipulating you....muawahhhaa haaaaahahaha!!!! Well planned and regular patrols are the proven method here. The random AI is best used as spice for the meal...not the meat and potatos.
I wasn't suggesting it be the meat and potatoes but perhaps just a characteristic of the odd patrol with considerable thought to gameplay and logic coseqences ofcourse.
I actually have experience in DroomEd (ShockEd) but very little in regards to patrols other than probarly a basic tutorial. Well glad to read it can be done and probarly has been done in the Thief games.

He should have one of those ping-pong rackets that has a ball attached with a rubber-string.
Or he could try to balance a spoon on his nose!;)
I'm not a big waiter when it comes to scoping out guard patrol routes and such. I won't usually go barging in though (except for some of the easier missions. Than I just get sloppy:p ). I do go slow, though. I just won't wait around 12 minutes for one or two guards.

Wouldn't want to play that game on tiles or metal incase the spoon falls. I can just imagine garret being suprised from behind and he turns around and cracks an enemy over the head with the spoon!:D

Yes there is, it is clearly hanging from his nose. Oh you mean a spoon worth stealing...;)

No. I mean a spoon from the matrix.

Garret is unfamiliar with this "Matrix". Is it some sort of ancient Keeper puzzle?;)

I think that is the fourth time you mispelled 'Garret'. :cheeky:
BTW, No puzzle. If garrett waits long enough, he will see how predictable and fake the world and AI are. Should Garrett take the red or blue pill ? :)
