I think after all Thief 1 adventures Garrett MUST believe in the Builder at least...
Shadowlurker on 14/9/2001 at 20:51
I don't know...
Garrett doesn't seem like one to be easily swayed to me, and I can't remeber anything in TDP that would definitely convince him of the builder's existence. The only thing that would work are "holy water" arrows, which could easily be some kind of chemical or something.

Or just magic...

Why does everyone assume Garret doesn't believe in anything?
He's a Thief, and in his words 'fanatics don't make reliable freinds' so maybe he isn't 'fanatical' about anything he believes - but going to the Watchmans Grave shows him to be at least a bit superstitious.
And I'm not quite sure what the 'Lucky Hand of Glory' is in Cragscleft, but if its another lucky charm type thing, there's even more evidence to support a superstitious nature.
Unless there are more instances where Garret states athiest views I can't remember?

What about The Trickster appearing before his very eyes? Just some nasty forest critter?
Shadowlurker on 28/9/2001 at 21:14
Yeah, but the Trickster was more one of the "old gods." He struck me as more of one of the gods of mythology, the kind that specialize in one thing, like fire or earth or death or the sea. I'm talking about an omnipotent, omniscient being, which Constantine obviously is not.

He strikes me as being more than a little superstitious. It's a dangerous job... you see strange things... who knows what's true? You need all the luck you can get.
Shadowlurker on 5/10/2001 at 00:11
He may be superstitious, but that doesn't mean he is religious to any extent. And it didn't seem likely to me that Garrett would leave any amount of money, no matter how small, in some tray for "The Watchman".

A heretic is someone who holds to beliefs considered unorthodox by those who define orthodoxy. Given his self-identification as a heretic, his superstitions, and his rejection of fanaticism, we may infer that Garrett is likely not an atheist. He would appear either to be overtly agnostic or else broadly, vaguely theistic in his beliefs.

Just a thing I remembered about the Hand of Glory. In "real world" IIRC, a Hand of Glory could either be used to cover a flame from a candle or a lamp so that nobody but the thief could see it. Another use was that if the hand held a candle, anyone who looked at it would fall asleep, except for the thief himself. So I'd say that even if Garrett's Hand of Glory doesn't have that kind of powers, it could be more just than "lucky".
