if they really get the combat right this could be a winner.
And what was wrong with combat in Witcher if I may ask? You prefer clickfest combat instead?

did I say the old combat was wrong ? hold your horses. CDPR said they already CHANGED the combat so I said I hope they get the combat right. with real-time clicky and soft-lock and combos it could get very wrong. the old style was a nice idea but on vanilla you just stood there and clicked away and geralt never moved, just took the beating and returned. I'm exicted that they try sthg new instead of just fixing the old version. and i like the demon souls combat which they cite as inspiration. the previews look like clickfest but I'm sure you can play it better.

Mind that some effects etc. are placeholders. It will stay online for few more days (if you want to see it for free).

I mean the heavy emphasis on QTEs from that leaked alpha presentation from a couple months back did send up a lot of warning flags. Also that Zelda or Capcom-style "BARREL ROLL DODGE OUT OF THE WAY AND CHOP OFF THE TENTACLES" boss from the recent shaky cam footage.
So that bloody Capcom boss is still in the game, complete with QTEs even? Christ, you could probably swap out Geralt for Dante (DMC) or Samanosuke (Onimusha) and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Whose to bet there's a boss that has to be defeated via deflecting laser beams fired at you with your sword, like a tennis serve?

yep, it's a bummer. but Tomas Gop repeats every interview that parts of the fight are optional, there are more than 2 ways to change the course of the fight, there will be different traps/magic for the fight depending on your decisions, a local sorcerer can trap the monster so it can't back up (which would change the last phase) and so on. well, just slashing away in normal style would look odd as well ---- but QTEs to break free from the icky stuff ??? at least it's limited to big monsters ( atm )
here is what I'm talking about:

wtf are you talking about ? these are the same presentations on the same version of the engine with exactly the same gameplay only from 2 different sessions.

The engine looks absolutely amazing. I want to believe them when they say they've created the best engine for an RPG.
But the gameplay looks very context sensitive which I hate. Press f to open the door, press f to extinguish the torch, press f to peek through the hole, press f to jump, press f to climb, press f to knock someone out, press f to not use your brain...
I'm not a big fan of this type of gameplay, it's like having the developper constantly telling the player what he can do, instead of the player being aware of it himself. Why can't they just teach me the controls of the game at the beginning and then let me use these controls myself as I see fit. Make me responsible of my actions instead of holding my hand all the way to the end of the game.
Still, the game looks really amazing. I have a feeling this is gonna put to shame every other pseudo-RPGs out there. The game world seems huge and yet it all seems very detailed and hand-crafted, not randomly generated like oblivion. And the plot seems highly interactive. I mean 3 openings, 16 endings, and shitload of different paths to choose from. That will be a nice change from the usual "Do you want to go left or right ?" or "Do you want to be good or evil ?" we get in every other game. I think this game will raise the bar and set a new standard for RPGs.
