I usually try to exit via the garden wall near the balcony as it avoids the barracks area. Two crates will get you up there (or rope arrow, but I don't think there's a rope arrow available on Expert).

Jump off the balcony near the museum onto the roof by the end of the garden. The into the street or the ditch.
If I recall correctly you can do this from either balcony.

Hmm, good idea with the crates. That main staircase is the bitchiest part of the level; there's always a guard at the top of it once the alarm goes off, just waiting for me to peek around and make the mad dash upstairs. That's what I meant about the barracks guys being a problem -- I think if they're left conscious, they'll leave the barracks and snoop around the staircase once you've grabbed the Talismans. My usual route has been as theBlackman suggested, run upstairs, hang left, jump off the balcony to the streets.
As a side note, I always find it amusing, at the beginning of the mission, to be rummaging through my inventory looking for my credentials to hand the guard. "Let's see, lockpicks, flashbombs, gas mines... ah! here we are!"
